why so many disfunctional serious bodybuilders?
« on: May 03, 2007, 11:14:50 AM »
While there have been some top bodybuilders that enjoy decent , happy, secure lives; it seems pretty rare .???
The personal lives and finances $$$ of many that get serious and hardcore seem to suffer.
I was taking to a guy that used to seriously compete (like me). We both realized how much better our overall life and financial security was since we stopped being so serious about bodybuilding and treated it as hobby.
I love bodybuilding and still train hard, but my finances and life quality kinda sucked when I was into serious competition.
I am not sure what the reality is here ? any thoughts??

You're preaching to the choir here, homey. I could write a book on this topic.

 I told this story before...

Buddy of mine. 4 yrs older than me so he's about 31 now. Lives at home and never ever ever has a job or works. He is ripped/tan and shaven clean year around. Uses gear and never comes OFF. 2 years ago we drive out to the ASC and he was PISSED because..."Dude...my dad is being an asshole, man...he only gave me $100 to spend..."

Anyway...when he was 21 he took the Chicago firefighters enterence exam. His dad is a Cheif on the job so he takes the exam and last summer he comes to the gym and shows me a letter. It was a letter saying how he is being selected to continue with the hiring process and must report to the Academy in 30 days. I was estatic for him...that's the best job ever in Chicago and for a bodybuilder. Work 81 days a year? Excellent pay and benefits. He was all grim about it and said he isn't going to bother. The reason? He was prepping for the Indiana State Show and couldn't go to the Fire Academy because..."dude, fk that man...all that running and shit they do in the Academy...I'll lose muscle fk that shit no way...I sent my pictures to Beverley Int. and they're the main sponsor of the show so fk that! "

That was last summer. He ened up NOT placing or qualifying for a national level show and I bet my hairy ass right now he's at home...playing XBox waiting for me to get home so we could train.

 Amazing, huh?

He's a good training partner, that's why. I get to gym and he got the music I want playing...machines loaded up and he's already warming up.

He's contest shape year around and tan. His life is MD Magazine...XBox and his hopes "to go PRO". Funny thing is...he never qualified for a national level show. Neither have I but I'm not him. I'm just telling the story.

I spoke to him the other day and he was telling me about how he ate a whole bag of Oreo cookies and woke up in the middle of the night and was more ripped as he's ever been. That's like...a HUGE event in his day. If not that he tells me about how he got 'life immunity' in Resident Evil. I don't even play video games. He just tells me.

He think's he'll go PRO in the next 2 years. He's competing in 2 weeks in Chicago and thinks I'm a pussy for dropping out of the show due to financial and personal legal drama. Some BB's just don't get it.

I can't even begin to tell ya the number of "gym bums" I have known over the years. Man, blockhead I loved reading your story on this loser and cracked up when I read he loved video games as well hehehe.
I was a pseudo gym buddy with guy in La, that had some potential and won a qualifier, etc. We can call him "joe Blow or JB" (not his real name dah ;) JB didn't work or even train anyone as his wife had a good career and worshiped him.
His parents all but bought his house when they got married. He had kids but sponged off his wife who even bought his drugs . He won his class in a decent sized regional qualifier as a HVY wt around 210. He was on a LOT of sauce and HGH but didn't do well at his first attempt at a nation level show, so he quit the sport, that same year. He was an ok guy, but pretty self absorbed and arrogant when he competed. Now he has a decent career going, still works out but seems a lot happier overall.

I can tell ya that when I was in the "pro card" mind set 20 yeas ago, I had a pretty UNstable life. I had just gotten out of the USMC and worked evenings as a bouncer in Fayetteville, NC. I had no health ins., credit card or bank account, etc. I had a junky car and lived in a run down , tiny 1 BR eff apt. I did very moderate amounts of juice and did ok in some regional shows. After 3 years of this "LIFE" and seeing no viable future, I got married ( 1st wife, I have been married twice , just divocred # 2) moved to KY in 1987 ,  went back to school to finish my first degree , a  BS chemistry and teaching certificate at Morehead State. Graduated Magna Cum Laude , and started full time teaching in '89. Life has been fun, secure and stable ever since. I returned to doing bodybuilding contests after divorcing my 1st wife in 93 and competed without drugs for 2 more years. Since 95 I have only judged , worked out and been a fan. As you may know I got divorced (again) last fall and was lucky enough to meet BETH, my present girlfriend.

One personal insight, from my experience, if you don't want kids (or have kids), you may not have much incentive to stay married after 5  yrs or so. I don't want kids nor do I have any. Both my ex wifes were classy, smart ladies and the marriages were good for a few years. Hard to say why we drifted apart in either marriage, it might just be a natural progression...who knows ???

I don't think it matters what it is- anything that takes over your whole life is going to mess you up.  It's not just bodybuilders- look at any pro sport, acting, whatever- if you have nothing else in life you care about, you get weird.

Simple. In order to be a Bodybuilder ( one that competes seriously ) you have to, to some extent, have an obsessive personality amongst other things. When your so concentrated on one thing ( in this case, Bodybuilding ) nothing else matters in life ... or as much, anyways. When I was competing seriously I had Money going all over the place ( Supplements, Food, Misc. needed for a Bodybuilding competiton ) except where it REALLY NEEDED to go ( Bills ). Being a Bodybuilder you are unable to really interact with the outside World, in the conventional sense, because compared to the outside World you are " Weird " ... you are " Disfunctional ", in a way. You have to accept the fact, as a Bodybuilder, that your Normal time WILL BE restricted. Now, I can't speak for everyone ... only myself and those around me that competed.

Ronnie had a real job before he made it big, and even a few years into his reign as Mr.O (I think)

Why can't all these amateurs or even other pros with financial difficulties get a side job?

Blockhead: That's a crazy story. If you were a real friend you'd kick your training partner in the ass. With a steel-toed boot.

Good topic! I live the "bodybuilder lifestyle" now and I have to admit that extra cash is non existent but I still maintain my household. The "dysfunction" doesn't just lie with bodybuilders though, forclosures are at the highest they've ever been in this great land of ours and I'm sure they are not all bodybuilders.

I guess what I dont get is why people aspiring to be bodybuilders or most pros don't have real jobs.  I think that most pros probably train 2 hours or less a day.  Some like atwood, cutler..... train twice a day, but the ones who train once a day have no reason to not also have a regular job.   I dont see why working from 8-4 then training would be a problem.  I know dieting can be a bitch when you have a normal job, but its only really bad for the last 4 weeks or so.  Also, last time I checked, Niether the IFBB or NPC have great benefits packages ???
