Might've been a commercial.

The ballet shoes were probably valued for their ability to be folded, easily carried and very light.

if he was he obviously overdieted and it affected his mental health.

Rather silly assumption inninit? In fact in interviews Boyer's very complementary of Oliva while acknowledging his own genetic shortcomings so he hardly seems likely to have followed that line of thinking. There's a hundred ways to interpret that shot, only one of them correct.
