Bodybuilding Mags that are actually run by bodybuilders?
« on: May 30, 2007, 02:51:42 PM »
Just curious how good (or bad) would MD or Flex be if they were run by former or active pro bodybuilders. I'm talking about ones that could write something intelligent or had Lit. backgrounds. I could see Shawn being an Editor in Chief for Flex Mag and Mike Francois or Nasser writing articles on training, with other former pros, as well as say Rich Jones or Jeff "Box" Long contributing.

MD could have Arnold as Editor in Chief or Franco. With Lee Priest as a writer (no Caps lock)...

At leat have people who are passionate about bodybuilding and not people who are trying to exploit people that have sixpacks (which the editorsand writers never have)

running multi-million dollar businesses require people trained to run multi-million dollar businesses.  you need to work your way to the top, not jump from the top of one field to the top of a completely unrelated field.  and publishing a magazine is completely different than competing on a stage.

I hear ya, but you hear the same thing from BBers, "No respect for us"
"We are exploited"
and same from fans about the Mags

Yet, if bbers could control the medium which they claim has a hand in their exploitation...it would be beneficial for the fans and the bbers

The mags won't even be around in ten years.  The internet has killed them... they're just taking a while to die and are too stupid to realize they're mortally wounded.

Give this man the prize!!

It is so insulting when people have this sense of entitlement over stuff they did not earn.  How dare Victor Martinez have the audacity to state that bodybuilding.com should give more money to the bodybuilders because of how successful they are.  How much money you earn in life is not a function of how hard you work but what the value of the work you generate is.  Victor Martinez has been paid for his efforts in one form or another (endorsement contracts, paid photoshoots, prize money, etc), and he consented to the terms of all of his work.  Nobody forced Victor on stage with a cattle prod and if after the fact he decides that he didn't feel the terms of his contracts were fair, he is perfectly free to cease participation in all future contract opportunities.

Bodybuilders can continue to do what they are good at: eating chicken, lifting weights, and pumping their bodies full of drugs.  When they actually learn how businesses work they can start to intelligently discuss the topic.

Oddly, the only one who sees this is that felon-hiring metrosexual Blechman, hence the attempts to jump to internet and radio.   The old guard over at Weider are just covering their ears, going "lalalalalalalalalalalala la", and thinking happy thoughts as they plunge towards the cliff.

As long as you exclude any Bluto quotes, sure!

How do you plan on profiting from this venture?

Absolutely correct!!  I first noticed this when I observed John Romano promoting the new website and forum at the Arnold to people who he talked briefly too.  MD has read the writing on the wall!  In 10 years, the most powerful entities in bodybuilding will be the biggest and best websites, which could include getbig if Ron decided to go that route.  Getbig remains very influential but is unlikely to ever become commercial because Ron has interests elsewhere, and all the power to him for feeling that way.

Jeff Everson's Planet Muscle is the only mag owned and run by someone who really knows the industry, nutrition and fitness.  Jeff is a very smart guy.

I learned it from this thread by "In it 2 win it":

Also, I agree with garraeth.  Even though all of the information is available online, I still prefer to have magazines available to read so I will continue to buy them.

Other than on the treadmill or the crapper, print rags are a relic of the past. And if you're like me and bring your laptop to the can, then mags are strictly for the treadmill. Unless you jerk off a lot to the photos, in which case print mags are a solid long-term investment.

Online is where it's at, particularly since our TVs of the not-too-distant future will have internet capability built-in. The playing field is leveled by the content. Content is always king.

Nahh, they'll still be around. Same as brick and mortar was supposed to be killed by amazon.com. People like tangibles. The internet will just become an alternative.

Not a good analogy.  Brick and mortar retailing will always be around for two reasons:  for some products, you can only tell so much from a photo... you want to look at it and hold it in yur hands in person before buying, and sometimes you want to buy something and take it home now, not 3 days from now via UPS.   With mags vs the internet, neither of these issues is valid.  The product is information, and it's the same online or in a mag...  and the time factor works the other way compared to a physical product, with the advantage going to the internet in this case.

The internet will kill print periodicals, and it will happen sooner than later.
