Not a good analogy.  Brick and mortar retailing will always be around for two reasons:  for some products, you can only tell so much from a photo... you want to look at it and hold it in yur hands in person before buying, and sometimes you want to buy something and take it home now, not 3 days from now via UPS.   With mags vs the internet, neither of these issues is valid.  The product is information, and it's the same online or in a mag...  and the time factor works the other way compared to a physical product, with the advantage going to the internet in this case.

The internet will kill print periodicals, and it will happen sooner than later.

Already happened.

One time they said that the television will kill the radio.
Then they said that the video tape machine will kill the movie industry.
Then they said that the CD and tape machines will kill the music industry.
Then they said that the internet sites will kill the retail stores.
People told me that multi channels and video games will kill the books that people read.
None of this happened.

Things adapt. Magazines have a unique place, and I still subscribe to a number of magazines, both bodybuilding and non-bodybuilding related. Sometimes you just want to read it on your own level, your own time, your own place.

While magazines cannot give you up to the date and current info, they can give you a retrospect, quality pics, and a storyline that is cool to read, and which I look forward to each month.

Now, as for bodybuilders running the magazines, if they can, it is great.  But like any business, you don't need to be a member of that sport to run a successful magazine, whether it be football, basketball, or anything. But you do need to be knowledgable and understand whatever you are doing.

Good points Ron, but whether or not magazines will be dead completely there will still be huge economic implications due to the advent of the internet.

www.zinio.com

They're a publisher of digital magazines. Alot of major magazines: BusinessWeek, Men's Health, MD, Playboy, etc are all available for digital download and subscriptions.

This is the future. Look at how newspaper subscriptions are collapsing. I read the other day that the Wall Street Journal has almost 1 million paid subscribers to their online website.

Well said mate.

There is definitely a place for magazines.  Computers are inconvenient.  With the exception of laptops, you can't just pick them up & take them anywhere.  And even laptops are a pain.  They run low on battery, you can't keep them out of your sight in case some bastard pinches them, you have to be careful not to drop them or spill shit on them.

Magazines are cool.  You can fold 'em up & take 'em anywhere.  If you misplace it, spill something on it or whatever, you just buy a new one.
They are cheap, convenient & disposable.  They won't die.

The Internet is obviously the way to go for up-to-date info, but you can't stick a computer on your fridge door or gym wall for motivation.
Rip a page out of a magazine, pin it on you fridge for motivation.  Awesome!

Everything has it's place.  Magazines have theirs.

As for BBers writing their own magazine, well, as Monsta said, Australia has it's very own magazine that is run by Aussie BBers, for Aussie BBers.
I am the proud publisher/editor.  Our first issue was released on 1st June and the response is far & above anything that I had expected.

We have no qualified people involved with the magazine, just local BBers.  Everyone tells me it's the best magazine that they have ever seen.  BBers know what BBers want.  No bullshit 'How to grow big arms in 10 workouts' kinda crap.  Contest reports & profiles are the mainstay of our magazine.  We just want to see photos of the comps & reports on how they went.  A couple of profiles on local champions & we are happy.

It's easily the best looking & most informative Aussie magazine on the market.
You guys should do something similar.  There is too much crap in BBing magazines these days.

Cheers.

Craig.

You just have to note the way that 99.99 per cent of bodybuilders struggle to put together a meaningful sentence on the Internet (in forums like this) to get a quick realisation on the futility of putting them in charge of a (relatively) successful magazine like FLEX. Yes, FLEX is a pile of shite, but it's a profitable one. And you have to applaud them for taking the piss - does any other magazine get away with printing basically the same thing each and every month?
