Here is a story of what actually happened when I was a really young kid.
My dad served in the navy in both WWII and Korea. After activde duty in he US navy he used his GI bill to go back to school to be a structural engineer. He worked at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard for many years on nuclear sub hull design/structural integrity, etc. In late Oct of 1963, he called my MOM from work and told her to get me (in kindergarten) and my older sis (gr 3) out of school and head to my Grandparents place in Ossippe NH , 55 miles north of Portsmouth NH. We stayed there for 2 weeks and then returned to our home. Much later we all realized this was at the ht of the Cuban missle crisis and my dad couldn't explain anything, but made sure we were out of harms way while he stayed on the base.
