The story that I remember most was only my second ever workout in Temple Gym in September '96. I was a wet-behind-the-ears 19 year old and I had only been training for four years at that point but nothing too seriously. I had come up to Birmingham to study at university and I had never trained in a serious gym before - only my home gym that I had made up back on the farm from a plank of wood and two beer crates for a bench. So anyway, I comes into Temple Gym and I had my bandanna on while I was doing smith machine squats (cos at the time I thought it made me look cool). Leroy came up to me after I'd finished my set and glared at me. I asked him what was up and he told me "you're not qualified to be doing that", and I said, "what?". He said "you're only qualified to be wearing that bandanna once you can squat five plates." I said "oh, right" and took the bandanna off. There was a couple of the gym regulars sitting sniggering behind me and I felt like walking out. But I didn't. I came back and trained hard and kept myself to myself and after a while Lee could see that I wasn't just a "fan" who wanted to train at Temple Gym just cos Dorian was there. I stayed at Temple Gym until 2005 and then moved out the area and trained somewhere else. By the time I left I had been able to squat five plates on the smith machine. Shame Leroy hadn't stuck around (he left in '97 after Dorian retired) but if he'd been there I would have worn the bandanna just to piss him off. He would've seen the funny side of it though as well. Good times.
Put simply, Doz dominated!!
