Black Dogs
« on: June 28, 2007, 08:08:53 PM »
Did You Know:   We are guessing that the general public is not aware of how doomed black dogs are when they are brought to a pound because black dogs, particularly black labs or lab mixes, are euthanized at a horrifying rate at many pounds & shelters because people pass them up for lighter colored dogs. If you are thinking about adopting a dog please don't overlook black dogs because they are just as loving & wonderful as lighter colored dogs! ~Martin County Animal Shelter, Fairmont,MN

Black puppies don't sell as well as light-colored dogs: That's a fact already known to most pet store owners and the reason why most of the dogs they stock are light-colored. Informal surveys done at shelters attest to the fact that black dogs are also the least likely to be adopted, and black terriers are the most likely to be overlooked and eventually euthanized.

Ok...I don't want to get myself in trouble here....so just keep in mind that I'm just stating something I've observed over the years....

Most black or hispanic people that I know (especially black people) are terrified of black dogs.

Ha!! People love it when I have the group all together!  3 big black dogs and one girl walking them.   ;D    And little Tad too.   :D

I make it a point to cross the street or to take them off the sidewalk and put them all in a sit if people are coming towards us.  Although some people will still choose to loop way around us.   :-\

seriously....when I take the Rottie for a walk (there's  alot of black people in the neighborhood) they say..

"Oh Shit!" & start running in an opposite direction.

Granted...some of them are just terrified of dogs period....but I had observed a Golden Being walked & nobody seemed to care.

I had a Large Black Male Lab growing up....same thing.....Black people were terrified of him & had the Sheriffs called 3 times on him.  When the cops arrived...they rolled their eyes because they said they had a complaint of a big black scary dog.  The complaint wasn't for barking, growling, off leash etc...  Just because he was scary looking.   ::)

We're thinking of adopting this pooch, Liza. She's 11 months now so she's a bit bigger. We're going to see her next week!

Yeah, my step mom in law breeds Labs. Liza is a bit undersized and short to show, so she offered her to us!

I used to breed labs (my family did) when growing up.

Not sure at what age she is in that pic...but she looks good.

The head & ears look good.  Needs a nice thick base at the tail & webbed feet.

Just for a house pet...no requirements necessary.

Looks great!

Without sounding extremely racist.... i also think this is true.  When I was in veterinary school my wife and I lived in what could only be considered a "bad" neighborhood---from drug deals on the corner to the girl pole dancing on the street sign.   The neighbor hood was a trip as far as I was concerned and my immediate neighbors were great people, but it wasn't exactly safe.  When I knew we were moving there, I asked my aunt what I needed to get for home security---she'd lived for several years in a questionable neighborhood in downtown St. Louis, so I figured she might have a good opinion.  She told me to get the biggest, blackest dog I possibly could.  And I think without a doubt she was right.... The people in that neighborhood were by far most afraid of my black lab---a big 92 lb goof who usually had a tennis ball in his mouth when he was at the door growling at some intruder.  They didn't pay as much attention to the boxer, the pitbulls, even the alligators, snapping turtles and giant constrictors (although those did get their attention  ;) ) I had in my house.  It was the big black dog they seemed afraid of the most.

I really miss that dog.......    :'(

That is probably why when that guy was coming towards me and Bri on the sidewalk, and even though I moved us off the sidewalk and up on a hill to let him go by at least a block before he got to us, the guy still had his butterfly knife open and in the air ready to stab my dog.

I will bet if the dog was white...that probably wouldn't of happened.

Since I've been walking the Rottie as a puppy (yes a puppy) I have some of the weirdest reactions.

Once he got around 40 lbs...people got weird.  I would say if I walk him down the street & 6 people are heading my direction....atleast 3 of them always cross the road to be on the otherside.  I will go down about half a block & look back & they ALWAYS cross back over again.  This happens almost on every single walk I take him on.

Friggen weird!

I took them off the sidewalk last week, and put them in a sit and someone still chose to make a big circle around us and not walk on the sidewalk.   ::)

ok, I do find that amusing actually.

Then you get those punk kids that make silly faces at your dog.

I had a kid do that once & he was with 3 other friends.  He must of been 14-15.

Anyways...I gave him the dirtiest look & came to a stop.  I don't think he ever looked at me nor paid attention.  His one friend was trailing behind & I made it a point to say (not talking to the kid....but as if I was talking to myself) "little fucker needs an ass beating".

Anyways...we kept walking & stopped after 10-15 feet to look behind be.  The one friend told the other kid & they all were standing there looking at us & I overheard one kid say something like "I meant nothing by it or something".  They weren't talking to me..but arguing amongst themselves.

The point I think that came across from all of it is...don't worry about the dog...fear the daddy.  I'm protective over my boy.  He can more than handle himself...but we're not raising him to be aggressive nor to be teased.  Seriously...my first thought that came to mind if something were to happen...is to tell the kids to go home & get their dad...so I can kick his ass.

But this is kind of in the ghetto...I doubt they had one.

I've had people ask to buy Emmett.  Because he is big.  Like I would just sell him.

Actually last week I was really quite nervous walking them.  It seemed like we were getting more attention than usual and I really did not like it.  The offers to buy Emmett because he is big really bothered me.   I could see him being dragged around as a status symbol and then ignored when the novelty wore off.  And then the guy who came over and had to tell me that he had pit bulls and wanted to see my guys cause they are big.  Great.    :-\   I actually have since worried about someone breaking in to take them now.  That was the first and last time we walk down that street.  Did not like that at all.

It's one of the reasons I started telling people it's "not ok to pet him because he may bite"

Seriously...the dog never would....but I just don't want people getting ideas.

Another tip....something I do when I take him for a walk...when I walk him back to place...I take a "once over" look around & make sure there isn't someone following us in a car or someone parked somewhere checking us out.  Looks for things or cars out of place.  It's not uncommon for dogs being stolen.  Especially if people know they are friendly & won't bite.

it absolutely amazes me the number of stupid people out there that will run up to a random animal and try to pet it, no matter if its a dog, a cat, a raccon, or something else.  I always laughed at the people in the clinic who would run up to a growling dog---one showing its teeth no less, and try to pet it, as if their petting the dog would make it not growl at them AND they wouldnt get bitten.  We had problems with a woman at the zoo the other day reaching through the boardwalk fence grabbing one of the baby kangaroos by the ear to "pet it".  She's lucky the mom didnt' kick her head off her shoulders, not to mention the two keepers standing there who she did it in front of.   She had absolutely no clue and then got pissed when she was told to not do that and leave the area.

I have this theory that mankinds biggest problem is we don't have enough predators to keep ourselves busy anymore with modern society.  People are raised in cities, they don't have any animal contact growing up (or its very limited) what so ever and then they go out and do something extra stupid.  If we were running from things trying to eat us, the stupid people would be afraid they'd get bitten and wouldn't be as likely to stick their fingers out.

I know its just a theory, but it sure seems to make sense.   ;)  ;D

LOL Vet!!

This is a sad but true story:

A bunch of baby ferrets were at a Petsmart and some dumb kid stuck his fingers in between the bars and got bit, and because they weren't sure which kit had bit him and they were too young to have had their rabies shot all of them were put down because the kids mother was a dumb bitch.    >:( :'(

They didn't have rabies the dumb asses!!   She didn't watch her kid and he got bit and the ferrets paid with their lives.   I wouldn't of had the ferrets destroyed and my kid would of been grounded!   >:(

I believe shortly after that is when Petsmart went to the aquarium type enclosures so people couldn't stick their fingers in there.

When i used to unleash the Mastino's on the grass in front of our house and started to go for a walk everybody just went inside!
Later i found out that it was one of my "friendly" neighbours across from me who told everybody the story that my Mastinos killed a child and ate the child whole!!!!! :-\

The things people come up with just because they are scared for the unknown... ::)
