Those who seem to think competative bodybuilding is a joke like to remind everyone how bodybuilding is not on ESPN, like that is the deciding factor on whether or not it is a legitimate sport.  There are hundreds of sports, many that are even in the olympics that never recieve a minute of coverage on ESPN, or anywhere else for that matter.  If it weren't for the olympics, I don't know that the world would even know some sports exist.  When was the last time ESPN covered a game of water polo, or highlighted the newest up and coming platform diver?  The hot dog eating contests and poker are novelties televised to draw in people who normally may not watch ESPN.  There are many extremely competative sports that never get coverage simply because they don't draw a big crowd and wouldnt get ratings.

I happen to like bodybuilding, but also agree with you 100% that the general public has no interest in it. However, there are many sports that I would rather poke my eyes out than be forced to watch, such as synchrozined swimming.
