Question for the ladies while dieting.
« on: August 06, 2007, 08:52:11 PM »
Ok, so I'm in the process of dropping some pounds, diet is perfect, resolve is there, will is there, training is there, nothing is missing, but there is something NEW that i am not accustomed to.  After 7pm, i get hungry, really hungry.  And i know i want simple sugars or carbs or something like that.  I haven't cracked much because i have just had a diet coke when i feel this way, but i want to drop the diet coke habbit as well.  I know most men don't get the sweet tooth/simple sugar/starchy carb craving as much as women do, so i am hoping one of you ladies will have some advice or answers for me.  i think i am covering my nutritional bases, so for reference, here are the foods/meals i am eating daily:

Breakfast:
1 cup low fat cottage cheese
3 egg whites
1 whole whet bagel w/peanut butter
1/2 apple

Snack:
1/2 can tuna
1/2 cup carrot sticks
1/4 apple

Lunch:

chicken breast
1/2 sweet potato
raw broccoli

snack:

1/2 can tuna
1/2 sweet potato
1/4 apple

dinner:
Chicken breast
brown rice
brocoli or spinach
spoonful of pb

Now, i am currently a solid 240lbs (can't see abs, but not a gordo, flat stomached i guess, waist 33 inches) and looking to get down towards a lean 195-205. I'm 6'1" on a good day.  I'm thinking a protein shake thats sweet might do the trick as well.  I'm also taking a multi vitamin and glutamine as well.  Just looking at that diet makes me think i might need more fat, but i am not sure. THANKS!

I am not a trainer or nutritionist and have only done one show so THE BEAST or rip or CQ as well as some others are going to have a lot of good comments for you but it seems like maybe you could add some flax oil?  I see you are having brown rice for dinner...during my diet I would add some flax oil and a packet of splenda to my rice and it was yummy.

It also seems like you need a lot more protein?

My last meal at night (the one about 3 hours after dinner) was 4 egg whites and either 5 strawberries or 1/2 apple.  But I would usually have a piece of (ezekial-type) toast instead of the fruit.

Then if I was still hungry later I could have a protein shake.  Having several different flavors to choose from was really helpful  :)

Stella's definitely on the right track.  I would up the protein a bit and definitely increase your healthy fats.  Both of these things may help you to feel more full during the day and into the evening.
Carb cravings, for the most part, are controlled by "mind over matter" which is easier said than done for sure.  However, adding fat to your diet will definitely help.

Your diet looks pretty good in general.  Here are a few things you could try:
You have five meals right now.  Try breaking it down into 6-7 meals and eating more frequently.  One of those meals should be a post workout shake.

-I would drop the cottage cheese in the morning and add 2-3 eggs with the yolks.  Use the omega eggs as they are full of good fats.  I think you could also up the number of whites to about 5-6.
-Your snacks are pretty small.  I would add at least one more of those during the day and/or up the tuna and go for the whole can.
-Add one tbsp flax seed oil to your lunch.  Be sure to get the High Lignan flax oil in the refrigerated section of the store, NOT the rank crap they sell over the counter at GNC, for example.  Flax oil actually tastes really good if you get the right kind.  You could also consider adding 1 tbsp to your dinner too.
If you are concerned that you are adding too many calories to your diet, one thing you can do is eliminate the brown rice from dinner.  I try to avoid complex carbs in the evenings altogether if I am dieting.  The rice isn't really doing much to address the cravings you are having, I don't think....and I think that the addition of fats will do more for this, actually.
-You should consider a post-workout shake consisting of 40-50 grams of protein and a little bit of simple carbs.
-For hunger in the evenings, you are right that a protein shake is a good way to go.  What I usually do when I am dieting is make a shake with a very low carb whey protein and a couple of packs of equal/splenda, and then freeze it.  When I am dying for something sweet late at night, it can almost be like ice cream, if you pretend hard enough LOL.  Beverly International proteins are great for this b/c they are clean and pretty sweet on their own.  The cookies and cream makes for a great frozen snack.
-Egg whites are also a great late night snack if you are starving to death, but they won't do much for the carb cravings you may be experiencing.

I've often wondered about Beverly products as I receive info from them all the time.

I love love love Beverly International products!!

Expensive...but one of the only brands that I think is worth the money.  I always use their protein during contest prep...it's clean and delicious.

I just received another newsletter from them w/order form enclosed.  If I were to just purchase one protein powder product (not chocolate I have enough), which should I get?

I'll expect a rip money back guarantee if I'm not fully satisfied ;D

The chocolate is my favorite, but chocolate anything is my favorite.

I would go with the Cookies and Cream because I generally hate vanilla protein powders, and because it's really sweet, and it freezes up good into a protein shake ice cream.  Just a heads-up, it is pretty thick stuff...but that's what makes it so good when you freeze it.

PM me if you hate it and you will receive a full refund.   ;D

Almost clean, hehehe...they, for some reason(to cut costs), still add Whey Concentrate to their protein...try to find a protein with no whey concentrate :)

I do admit that is is one of the Better proteins out there and as a whole Beverly has good products.

From a news article I found:

Omega Eggs are high in beneficial Omega 3 fatty acids and contain less saturated fat than conventional eggs.

Omega Eggs look, taste and cook like regular white eggs. It's what's inside that's different. They contain 350 milligrams of Omega 3 fatty acids compared with 60 milligrams in regular eggs.
Thanks to the hens' Omega 3-rich rations, these eggs also have 180 milligrams of cholesterol compared with about 215 milligrams in regular eggs and a third less saturated fat.

Omega 3s are known to reduce several heart disease risk factors yet many Americans don't eat diets rich in these beneficial fatty acids. Omega 3 fatty acids increase the ratio of good (HDL) to bad (LDL) cholesterol in blood and decrease occurrence of blood clots and arrhythmias, research indicates.

“Two Omega Eggs provide the same amount of Omega 3 fatty acids as a 3-ounce serving of salmon,” a major source of Omega 3s, Scheideler said.

A study by NU Nutrition Scientist Nancy Lewis found that people with high cholesterol levels who ate two Omega Eggs a day, six days a week, decreased their serum triglyceride levels by 14 percent and their cholesterol levels didn't increase. High triglyceride levels are a heart disease risk factor.

P.S.  Love you Jenn!   :-*
