not anymore popular to be honest.....

let me tell you the #1 reason bodybuilding isn't as popular as it could/should be.... HOMOPHOBIA.

people are afraid that if they follow bodybuilding (looking and comparing men's near-naked physiques) others will see them as gay.

that and the drugs.

sounds like a personal issue to me, if you suck dick you suck dick doesn't matter if you follow bodybuilding or not, you're comfortable with who you are aren't you?

probably not much, the only difference the common person would see between that pic of bob choick and ronnie coleman is the fact that one is white and one is black.
remember this is a society that considers brad pitt 'ripped and built'

no because straight guys are sooooo scared of other people accusing them of being queer that the will automatically blow off bodybuilding as gay...

how many young guys lift in the USA... MILLIONS and MILLIONS.... how many will actually admit to follow bodybuilding.... a fraction of that. the gay issue...

i'm not saying bodybuilding is gay.... i'm saying people are scared to admit they follow bodybuilding because then they will look gay to others.

yeah, funny how that works.

anyway, bodybuilding wasn't much more popular when the guys did look like that. even then it was basically riding off of arnold. the problem is that while arnie was a freak, he was 235 and 6'2". huge, but human. he could be in a movie at that size and just look like a very big dude. even guys like bob and rory are at a freakish level of size that just look like a rhino to most people. don't forget that the male ideal went away from the arnie/vandamme mold a while ago.

it also doesn't help that bodybuilding isn't a test of athleticism or skill, just parading around nearly nude for men to judge. plus have you actually seen a show? jeezus it's boring. that's why WSM can have marathons, because it's fast, exciting, and an actual contest. who the fuck wants to sit and watch 23 guys post for four hours?

Any old timers have an idea how many people attended pro bodybuilding shows back in the day?  It'd be interesting to compare the attendance pre-Pumping Iron, after Pumping Iron and into the 80's and 90's.  I assume that the audiences were much larger during the late 70s and 80s and have tapered off to almost nothing now.  Certainly is hard to sell bodybuilding to people when you have freaky unnatural physiques like Yates, Coleman and Cutler.

Bodybuilding would be no more popular than it is now. I think the only way its gonna get anymore popular is if you show people what the can do with that physique. Just to look big isnt enough for most people. They would say "wow, he's big but is he strong?" Feats of strength as a part of the judging would be awesome!

Just my 2 cents.

it used to be like that in the old AAU shows with guys like Grimek doing some Olympic lifts along with the posing.

Really?! Never knew that, got vids?

I'm telling you, most people think that these are guys full of drugs and can barely move so their size becomes worthless. Feats of strength, thats where its at!

nah no video we're talking about the 40's and 50's but those guys were easily as strong as they looked.

bodybuilding will never be a huge "sport"...it would be more popular if the physiques looked more attainable (...altho they wouldnt be for most people).

more attainable physiques are more inspirational.

to be honest i dont care tho..as i will never attend a bodybuilding show again.

most bodybuilders look better 5 weeks out from a show.

If I remember correctly, in the AAU back then it was a double deal, weightlifting and bodybuilding combined to give you a score.

That's it right there.

BBing is as boring as fuck. Even if you buy into it(I do) you have to admit a contest is corny as hell.

I didn't even make it straight thru the "o" webcast, I started doing BILLS :P

i'm not saying bodybuilding is gay.... i'm saying people are scared to admit they follow bodybuilding because then they will look gay to others.

You, sir, are smarter than the average bear.  Here is an example...

i remember at my old apartment i used to have a poster of ronnie and arnold,, when people looked at the arnold one they were like ''that dudes jacked'' then when they looked at the ronnie one they would call me a fag for having that on my wall.. i had to take ronnie down..

call me a homophobe or whatever you want,,but you wont catch me watching too many bodybuilding shows. dudes twirling around in thongs is not something i want to look at. i like watching them train, but striated glutes is not my thing. with the bigger posing trunks they used to wear, it makes bodybuilding look like an artform.. when you have a thong wedged up your asshole is more like gay porno.

You are a hypocrite and a coward to boot.

You obviously had no problem with the Coleman poster when you went to the trouble of obtaining it and hung it on your wall.  Day after day you looked at it and obviously admired it.  Only after your guests called you a fag did you decide that you “had to take Ronnie down.”

I’m sure you will still watch body building shows/videos; you just won’t do it in front of your friends.

I suggest you save up your allowance and go buy a backbone when you have enough money.  Better yet, track down your guests and ask them if you can have your manhood back; they obviously took it with them when they left.  :-[

Speak for yourself. I'm not scared to let anyone know i'm into bodybuilding, I actually tell people they should get into it (natural) and watch the olympia with me when it's on. I'm never accused of being gay because I'm obviously straight and have agirlfriend. Not to mentipn I look at women like their pieces of meat all the time.

I feel bad for you man I bet you're scared to admit you like certain music because others don't. Don't worry about other peoples opinion so much. In the end nothing matters anyways.
