Hey, that's the word!

Heh, oh believe me, he's "banking" it. Blizzard? You know how much management gets in bonus checks each quarter? uh, a fuck ton...

I just googled "Blizzard."  When I made my previous post I thought they were some Dairy Queen type chain.  ;D

No, its not a "waste of time" completely.  But c'mon, what takes 5 years to do?  Cities can be built in 5 years, so why would researching one narrow and specific area take as long?  ie. parental support in early child development has a beneficial role in child education.  c'mon.  Research is vital, but I am just saying, not impressed with a PhD degree.

My older sis is an MD and also has a DO ( osteopath). She started as  a med tech and got her masters, then taught at a small college  before she went to med school. This made her a really well rounded Doc and she may soon get on staff at the Med School at Ohio State. I agree that the MD is the gold standard of advanced degrees, no question about it. It has the most status and is a rough admissions process as well.
However, some fields do have a great deal of rigor when granting advanced graduate degrees.
My masters in physics was a lot tougher to obtain than my doctorate in science ed for example.
I think being a doctor of medicine is one of the greatest things an individual can do for a career.
In my humble opinion, you might consider other fields as valid and worthwhile , as it looks quite pompous to look down on the rest of us poor slobs with "ordinary" adavanced degrees.

Bullshit . . . an MD from a lower tier school carries a a lot less weight in my book than a Ph.D. in history from Johns Hopkins or Stanford or even a public school like Michigan.

MD from Johns Hopkins or HMS is, of course, a whole different story.

That is my point. Thanks for making this great example. OVERALL on average , an MD from any US-AMA approved school is in my opinion  the highest status. But am MD from St Dipshit of the Carribean is not all that great LOL.
A Harvard law degree is pretty high on the totem as well .

yale & stanford law are far more prestigious.

Harvard takes more than twice as many students as yale & stanford put together.

I did grad school in Stanford. It's the most overrated University I've set my foot into.

Here is mine!!

Cool!
A degree is a wonderful indicator of academic success and possible career paths/success.
I also feel that is not indicate the overall value of the person however.
Congrats on getting this PhD. Good school and great field.

having that name on your resume is an asset though . . . it's just the way people classify things.

Depends what domain you work into. In the Bay Area, I've worked in places where they would not hire any engineers with Stanford degrees (usually Berkley shits) etc...

BTW, getting into grad at an "Ivy league" isn't an accomplishment; all you need is a 3.0, decent GRE and a check book.

If you already work for a high tech company, it's even easier.

it is true some employers will put a lot of weight into WHERE you graduated from rather than in what.

I think a lot of why I got my current job was because I had the name "University of Toronto" on my resume.

Up here in Tundra land aka Canada, it carries a lot of weight to some people.

I think we need to put things in perspective here...Bill Gates dropped out of college ,hmmmmm.
For most of us slobs however, a good education is a must to have a decent career.
The bottomline is to do the best you can with the brains, resources and degrees you can obtain.

Bill Gates did not drop out of college . . .

he dropped out of Harvard.

And his dad was partner at what was then a big deal law firm in Seattle (google K&L Gates).

if you have all that going for you, then go ahead and write your own ticket.

So you don't believe that a highly educated Doctor like 'worm', who has studied at some elite university, has time to post on getbig?   ;D
