I went to a med school in Ohio.

Seriously, having gone thru med school, and did the research route in undergrad, PhD is not nearly as respectable as a MD.  I look at a PhD like a waste of 5 years of one's life.  they research ONE topic for 5 years and write a paper on it.  big deal.  Does not mean they are smart, just spent an ungodly amount of time on one topic or question.  You can get a PhD in anything, from studying a gene on a fruit fly, or studying the 'art' of a civilization that went extinct 1000 years ago...
Wow. LOL. You not only sound undeducated here, but one with an anger management problem. Let me genuflect: You are the 'doc;' you are the 'man.' Sorry to have ruffled your esteemed feathers. Must be a drag washing your hands after soiling them on-line with us, the Getbig unwashed.  ::)

LOL. you can "genuflect" all you want.  funny.  I am not angery at all, I am quite happy.

I simply stated that I am not impressed with PhD's.  It is the equivalent of the minor league.  True, you are still a baseball player, but nonetheless, they are the ones who still have to genuflect.

This may help clear things up.

My name is Dr. Worm.
Good morning. How are you? I'm Dr. Worm.
I'm interested in things.
I'm not a real doctor,
But I am a real worm;
I am an actual worm.
I live like a worm.
I like to play the drums.
I think I'm getting good,
But I can handle criticism.
I'll show you what I know,
And you can tell me if you think I'm getting better on the drums.
I'll leave the front un-locked 'cause I can't
Hear the doorbell
When I get into it I can't tell if you are
Watching me twirling the stick.
When I give the signal, my friend
Rabbi Vole will pay the solo
Some day somebody else besides me will
Call me by my stage name, they will
Call me Dr Worm.
Good Morning how are you, I'm Dr Worm
I'm interested in things.
I'm not a real doctor,
But I am a real worm;
I am an actual worm.
I live like a worm.
I like to play the drums.
I think I'm getting good,
But I can handle criticism.
I'll show you what I know,
And you can tell me if you think I'm getting better on the drums.
I'm not a real doctor,
But they call me Dr. Worm.

He'll be back... he had to go eat meal #3, 1900 calories worth of pizza and ice cream, so he doesn't get catabolic.

So as an MD you feel that real intense and focused reserach is a waste of time? ???wtf?
That surprises me . I agree an doctorate in most fields like in education as I have is not as lofty and respected a degree as an MD, but c'mon....

That's about par for the course.  Most MD's believe only what the AMA tells them to believe, and that is driven by economics not science.

A lot of MD's have no more appreciation for the scientific method than your average reporter has.

LOL.

any numbnut can get a doctorate degree!  try getting into med school.  losers who do not get in go to research and get their "doctorate" degree...which translates into not a real physician.
Funny you say this because a friend of mine got his doctorate (PHD? I dunno...) in...um...can't remember the official crazy term, but it's the study of how the brain organizes thoughts into speech. Just the other day he was joking about how much of nothing his degree did him because it's too narrow a field of study and there are no jobs for it.

Now he's working at Blizzard and loving it.  ;D

...oh, but he is truly brilliant...no numbnuts here...just poor judgement (not figuring on how hard it would be to get a job in his field)

No, its not a "waste of time" completely.  But c'mon, what takes 5 years to do?  Cities can be built in 5 years, so why would researching one narrow and specific area take as long?  ie. parental support in early child development has a beneficial role in child education.  c'mon.  Research is vital, but I am just saying, not impressed with a PhD degree.

I know people w degrees in neurolinguistics who are banking it . . . seems like there might be other issues w your friend if he did get a doctorate in that field.

because people doing their PhD's have a lot more obligations than just working on their research.

like teaching for one.

most people getting masters/PhD degrees spend a lot of their time teaching undergraduate classes, which is a lot of work at the university level.

its not high school anymore.
