Have you ever run out of gas (in your car)?

Did it come upon you as a surprise or were you watching the gauge playing Kramer?


I helped a guy the other day who said he had a hole in his gas line and he had been waiting for his father to fix it. He had to have been in his 20's or 30's.  Wouldn't you take care of something like that yourself as soon as you knew there was a problem? :-\

never.  I saw a thing on dateline or 20/20, the guy went 40 miles after his gauge showed E.

When I was 18 I drove a boat (and old 1973 Delta 98).  I drove that car 2 or 3 times to the point of coasting into a gas station.  I depended on the "reserve" far too many times. lol

Right after HS I had  a beat up, lifted 84 jeep CJ7 that I used a dowl rod to check the gas in since the wire for the gauge got ripped off the tank when i was 4 wheeling. My buddy was jerkin around with the rod one night and threw it at some girls on the side of the road. I didnt have another dowl rod so i just winged it for a few weeks. Until I ran out of gas and pushed it almost a mile to the gas station.

Never, I am always very good at watching the gauge.
But I have been in other peoples cars with them driving and running out of petrol  >:(

I've had the idiot light come on a few times   :P
I get lazy when there's a stretch of bad weather.

I usually get about 25 miles when my light goes red - if I let it go longer than that and the car runs out then I've got no-one to blame but myself.

No.  I can see that happening in a car that you borrowed or rented, but there is no excuse for that in your own vehicle.  In your own car, you should know how low you can go before running out.

My car has a reverse gas meter that comes on at 50 miles. From there it counts downward and tells you how many miles you can go before you run out of gas.  :)  Once I had it down to 1 mile as I pulled into the gas station.

Never.  I had account I just had to sign, it was part of my contract.

But I once phoned the office (I was driving my boss's silver jag) to say I'd been towed.  They thought I'd said totalled and I got tons of sympathy and I even got the rest of the day off.

yup done it twice. once at like 1am

and at least one time i just barely coasted into the gas station

this was years ago...i dont let it go that far anymore

 Last year I ran out of gas in my truck ( very large truck, crew cab dually 4wd) at a stop light right in the middle of US 31 at 8 am. People were honk'n..get'n mad.. I was like "Oh well..it's too big to push you just have to wait" Luckily there was a gas station right there,which is where I was headed before some boob wouldn't go through the yellow light,leaving me at the light running on vapors.

It's never happened to me in my car. I'm always on top of that kind of thing.

About 10 yrs ago, I was driving with a friend and we managed to barely coast off the road (on fumes).
I just whipped out my cell phone, called a cab who drove us to the nearest gas station where we filled up a jug, and drove us back to the car, where we poured the jug in, ...and then drove on to the gas station to fill up the tank.
