oatmeal and stomach upset...question
« on: August 24, 2008, 07:38:20 AM »
sometimes i like to make a shake in the morning-its ice water, 2 tablespoons of natural peanut butter, 2 scoops of whey isolate, and a cup of dry oats...i notice like 5 minutes after drinking it i get a bad stomach ache and i need to use the bathroom...and it happens every time.

any ideas of what could be happening?

The oatmeal will continue to absorb liquid for awhile after being blended and consumed.  If your shake is semi-thick when you drink it, it might be turning into a rock in your gut.  Slam plenty of water behind it and see if it helps.

Ice cold water or juice in the morning also gives me problems.
Maybe try it with room temp coffee, a shake with coffee is a trick I learnt from RIP and it works.

Agree with more water.
May not even be the oatmeal causing the problem.
Some powders alone can cause GI distress in some people if they’re not diluted enough.

If you add more water and still have problems, consider trying some digestive enzymes, or better yet, buy a protein blend that has some in it like ON’s line.

Is the benefit in the temperature or the content of the liquid?

temperature because of the stomach ache.

other than that, some caffeine in the morning is not bad imo.

I think you mistake me for someone else. (Deicide?)

I never wrote about that, or maybe once before.

Try using cooked oatmeal rather than raw.

Cook it the night before and either refrigerate it or freeze it. If you freeze it, you'll need less ice to blend. The texture and consistency will be quite different and you'll probably need to get all the carbs you want from another source since cooked oatmeal is about twice the volume of raw.

I make a similar shake in the morning.

I add the oats (quick version) to the water or crystal light and blend on high for about 30 seconds to really grind up the oats.

Turn off, add oil or PB (no more than about 15 g. of fat), add protein (about 50 g. max) then blend lower speed for a few seconds to liquify.

Not sure cold water will make you poop right away but might be too many calories or too much protein to digest. Try cutting down quanity of everything and see if that helps.
