"Starting Oct. 1, Medicare won't pay for 11 preventable conditions acquired during a hospital stay.  Added to the list of noncovered conditions are:
-surgical site infections following elective procedures as orthopaedic surgeries, bariatric surgery for obesity, manifestations of poor glycemic control, deep vein thrombosis & pulmonary embolism following knee and hip replacements (which is quite common). 

These are new noncovered items, in addition to: foreign objects retained in surgery, air embolisms, blood incompatibility, presure ulcers stage 3 & 4, falls & trauma, urinary tract infections from a catheter, vascular catheter infections, and certain complications after heart bypass grafting.

The point is that we will see more and more of this as more people become covered under government medical programs.
