Training Back Twice a Week?
« on: January 18, 2009, 03:10:28 PM »
I'd like to bring my back up and I'm thinking about training back twice a week with 2 full rest days in between each back workout.

Good idea of bad idea?

Definitely, and there's no reason to limit it to parts to  bring up, can apply to any muscle and used most of the time-most top guys over the decades hit each muscle twice weekly.

Hit the muscle again after 2 or 3 days rest.

This is a good idea hammer house, I would recommend concentrating on rowing movements one day and pulling movements the next.

I've got a couple friends who always hit back twice a week & it seems to work fine for them. One day they'll do exercises for "thickness" & the other day they'll do exercises for "width".

This is a decent way to hit it.  You can also just occasionally throw 2-3 sets of a back exercise (row, chins, etc) at the end of a workout for another bodypart to boost your weekly volume without impacting recovery much.

Separating it in to rows one day and chins the next is one way, or include some form of rows, chins/pulldowns and pullovers in each workout, and change the exercise selections from one workout to the next if you want variation.

Variation's not always necessary though, i get good results just by keeping the intensity and weight high rather than changing much from one workout to the next.

Some of the recent trends in exercise-once a week per muscle, changing up the exercises each workout-are worth trying but are by no means the only way to go even if popular now.

Good idea twice a week for most guy's. If you want to get DL's and shrugs in one workout and the next back workout focus on the actually pulling motion for the lats themselves; rows, chins, etc.. Of course all depends on the rest of a weekly workout program; high volume, workout days, etc. Though there is something to be said for once a week muscle group training also. Sometimes more is not always better. Have to check that out for yourself. Good Luck.

Be carefull with the total volume of each back workout + and take notice that your back workout donīt interfere with yout leg training (because you may need your lower back on leg day). So you train back 2 times in 6 days (?) and not a week ?. Keep testing with different rest in between (maybe every 3,4,5 days ?). The schedule which bring you the best progression itīs the one that will work for you.....
Weīre not all "Ronnie Coleman" who trains back 2 times a week like a maniac.....

P.s. today iīm a bit proud cause i did a new personal (natty/drug-free) record in my back workout with dumbell rows, 12 reps with 209 lbs (95 kg), Tut was 44 seconds (1 knee on a flat bench).

in 5 Years i will be 50,5 yrs old..... ::)  (but hope to make a bit further progress in the next 2-3 yrs, hopefully)

i know these dumbellrows vidīs of "Kroc", and they still motivate me for my own training, but the 25 reps with the 220 clip i liked more, because the form was better (more bent over) than in that 300 lbs. monster thing.....) Maybe i take a Youtube-clip of my next Back workout and link it here ??

in my last back workout (which i taped with a cheap digicam) i used another type of Dumbell rows, not with the knee on a bench, standing with both legs, and stabilizing with the not trained arm...in that manner i did on the last set of my 2nd Back exercise 10 hard reps with 105 kg (olympia-dumbell + 4 x 15 KG, 2 x 10 kg, 4 x 5 kg Plates), which is about 231lbs...ok, form could be a bit better, but a 10 kg extra to the last workout is no easy thing to do......but i will be working on that ::)
