Hearns
« on: January 22, 2009, 07:37:11 AM »
Without Sugar and Hagler of his generation...how would Hearns fair against this generation of 147-154lbers?   FMW, Cotto, Hatton and Pac are all sub-5'8" guys, and Marg would leave his chin open like Duran for his one shot power.  Paul Willians at 73 ins would be interesting  Of course Hearns did have a glass chin at 160lbs but i dont think the above guys could beat sugar or hag in their prime.

That was a devastating hit, one of the most brutal. But I don't know how tall Hagler (off hand) was and I would say that he was better than both those fighters and I consider him and Sugar Ray Robinson the best of that weight class of all time.

Boxing was great back then.  Went to a hearns leonard fight at caesars.  Was crazy as hell.  Could have went to that fight too but was doing something else at the time if I remember.  Always got free tickets to the fights back then.  Shit even way back then the ticket for the Hearns Leonard was $1500 and that was for a seat on the first row riser (which is the best place to sit to see a whole fight.

Good for you onlyme!  I would have loved to see some of those fights.  Did you go to any Ali, Salvador Sanchez, Frazier or other fights?

I like Pac but he is a setup for FMW and a big payday vs FMW fighting one of the dangerous guys in the division.  Once FMW gauges his speed...he'll counter punch the hell out of him like hatton.

unless he makes a fight out of it...i want to see Edwin Valero vs Pacman, but its not going to happen cause he is too dangerous and has no following.... thus you got a fight where your breadmaker loses to some guy that no one knows.

I have news for you? Hatton is not going to win. This is Hattons last payday and after Pacman beats him he'll never fight in America again.

i have a message for you.  the money will be too much to pass on with FMW.  Pac would lose on pts.  it's not like he'll be fighting a large 147 guy.  FMW is the small end of the spectrum.  Plus Pac is active and FMW will probably fight on his heels...not much power stuff.

they go throw the game to get to the BIG PAYDAYS!

No I was too young.  I really didn't get into boxing till I was the Guest of Honor at the 1987 Boxing Hall of Fame Dinner where Ali, LaMotta, Ortiz and Eder Joffre were inducted in LA.  My old business partner ran the boxing at the Forum in Inglewood so I went there every Tuesday.  My uncle got free tickets to every fight in Vegas.  So I started going with him.  Sat 5th row will all the hotel owners at the Tyson/Bruno fight.  that was fun as heck.  We promoted a fight in Ft. Myers, FL once.  Trevor Berbick fought (1st fight after loss to Tyson), Hector Commacho's cousin fought as did Joe Fraziers kid.  The day before the fight though I ended having to leave to go to San Diego to work on a film called Dangerous Curves with Leslie Nielson so I didn't even get to see the fight.  I did see Larry Holmes fight in Hawaii during his comeback.  That was hilarious.  He got yelled at after the fight and then jumped into the crowd from the ring.  It was funny as hell.

What are you talking about? I'm saying Pacman will beat Hatton. He's gonna kick his ass actually. Then Hatton will never fight in America again.

It's gonna go down. Where else is Hatton going to go? If I were Pacmans camp I would of offered those silly pomes 70/30 or stay in Manchester. Manny is boxing's #1 draw right now. Hatton is only a star in Manchester. Most people don't even know where that is let alone care. Guaranteed Hatton takes whatever he is offered. The fight is way to big to pass up.

Hearns was good but his chin was suspect, he would have a very hard time with Cotto and FM's superior boxing ability.
Cant believe Pacquioa didnt go for the Hatton fight and now he wants to fight Valero FFS, who the fk is Valero???

I'd take him down with my superior ground game then hook him in a submission.

Haggler was unbelievable in his prime, his fight with Sugar Ray was a travesty! What a total joke. My hats off to him for never stepping in the ring again!

My manager at the time was the nephew of Art Braverman who was Don Kings right hand man.  He had the contact and we were in LA so they asked us if we wanted to go.  It was an awesome night and met everyone who was anyone in boxing.  Sat next to Ali at dinner and afterwards went up to the front and sat at the tables signing autographs with everyone.  I sat between Ali and LaMotta.  It was awesome cause I got Ali to sign something for me and then he asked me to sign something of his.  He wrote "to the Champ, from the Ex-Champ"  Muhammad Ali.  Jake laMotta was awesome too.  Eddie Futch had me mixed up with someone else cause he kept telling me he saw me fight and thought I was great.  Jimmy Lennon Sr. was the emcee.  It was an awesome night and that pic I posted was outside as we were waiting for our limos.  Ali snuck up behind me and grabbed me.  We ended up wrestling on the ground.  He really liked me and I made him laugh alot.  He really liked my fist size as did LaMotta

Hearns fought during a time when the top 5 fighters in his weight class were legends.  Are any of todays guys like Cotto are going to be talked about in the same light 20 years from now? You won't even know there names.  Hearns, Hagler, Leonard, and Duran will go down in history of the sport.  Hearns got beat but it was against some of the greatest boxers of all time.  He had an incredible punching power.  There was never such a thing as a boring Hearns fight.  Even when he lost he pounded the other with severe power shots.
