CNN) -- Same-sex marriage became legal in Maine on Wednesday as Gov. John Baldacci signed a bill less than an hour after the state legislature approved it.

"I have come to believe that this is a question of fairness and of equal protection under the law and that a civil union is not equal to civil marriage," said Baldacci, a Democrat.

Not a huge issue to me but they already had civil unions, which honored all state benefits of marriage. Gay activists are very pushy and quite intolerant when they don't get their way.

Excuse me....how big is the gay population in California....and prop 8 was voted down? I'm from Mass....the libs have pushed into NH and the rest of New England. People aren't slobbering to ok gay marriage, they never got to vote. The Vermont legislature ok'd it. That gov exists in a bubble. Montpelier and Burlington are very liberal, the rest of the state is very rural and not the kind of folks to buy off on gay marriage. The militant gays are pushing this shit because the average person has bigger worries.

Not all states have ballot initiatives and most states who do have them, abhor them as there is no protection for the minority as intended by James Madison.

For instance, could you have imagined a ballot initiative in Alabama during the the 60s? I have a feeling that African Americans would have had it even rougher than they did.

Has there been any problems for Heterosexuals since Connecticut and Massachusetts legalized gay marriage? If so, what are the problems and why?
