Parents’ warning over steroid death of marine cadet teen Matt Dear

Matthew Dear

TRAGEDY: Matt Dear

A cadet aged 17 died yesterday after taking steroids in a tragic bid to get into the Marines.

Matt Dear suffered a fatal swelling to the brain when he tried a £30 black market batch of body-building pills.

Dad Chris, 43, of Southend, Essex, said: “He lived for joining the armed forces but fell to pieces before our eyes.”

After his death yesterday, his grieving family released this heart-wrenching photo of him as he vainly fought for life in hospital.

Mum Tina, 41, said: “He was my baby. and I can’t believe this has happened. We just hope that by sharing our pain over his tragic death we can help save someone else’s life and make them think twice about taking steroids.”

Dad Chris, 43, added sadly: “He was such a good kid – pure gold. He lived for joining the armed forces. But our healthy, strong son fell to pieces before our eyes because he took steroids.”

Part-time postman Matt – in the Army and Marine cadets since he was 12 – could not wait to take the gruelling selection test and join the real thing when he turned 18 in three months.

He spent hours in the gym and was so health-conscious he did not smoke, rarely drank and even shunned painkillers and chocolates.

Tragically, he undid all his good work when he secretly spent £30 on the black market pills three weeks ago.

Classroom assistant Tina,  said: “He was so vulnerable and trusting. He would have taken them out of naivety as he wanted to be fit enough for the Marines.”

Matt, whose brother Peter, 16 was also a cadet, first fell ill two weeks ago after a barbecue.

His dad, also a postman, said: “I put it down to food poisoning. Even though he felt ill, he still went to work.”

But a week ago he took a turn for the worse – and came clean for the first time about the drugs. Chris, of Southend, Essex, said: “He said he didn’t know where he was. His pupils were the size of saucers and he seemed really ill.

“When paramedics arrived, Matt told them he’d taken steroids. This was the first we knew.”

His son went to hospital but was discharged the next morning when he felt better.

His father added: “I was still so angry at him for being so stupid and taking steroids that I told him off as we walked home.”

Matt seemed fine for most of the rest of the day. However, that evening he told Peter he could not see. He returned to hospital and a scan appeared clear, but after the first day he rapidly grew worse.

Chris added: “He said he felt he was drunk and had horrendous stomach pains. He was screaming out in pain. He was in such agony. It was unbearable to see.

“They moved him to the critical unit. They had to sedate him and he started to have fits. They did another scan and told us his brain had swollen.”

Matt, who had three brothers and a sister, finally lost his fight for life yesterday morning. Chris added: “They said his  brain had died and his kidneys packed in.”

An Essex Police spokeswoman warned of the risks of steroids and said: “Health experts advise extreme caution before taking any non-prescribed performance-enhancing substances.”

dA youth, 17, a man, 21, and another man, 24, all from Essex, were arrested on suspicion of supplying a controlled substance and later released on bail.

Teenager Matt Dear's death is proof steroids can kill

The tragic death of teenager Matt Dear is proof that steroids can kill.

Bodybuilders, fitness fanatics and sportsmen and women should heed the sad fate of the Royal Marine cadet.

Matt, 17, died after taking a substance he thought would enhance his performance but it cost him his life.

Health experts worry that a growing number of people - young people in particular - think steroids are an easy, risk-free way to build muscles.

Yet steroids can devastate vital organs and the result can be a painful death.

Gym owners have a responsibility to clamp down on dealers and the police should be on the look out for steroid pushers.

But the easiest way to beat the dealers is to educate our children to say no, to refuse to buy these potentially fatal drugs.

Our hearts go out to Matt's grieving parents and we hope others will avoid the fate of a son cruelly snatched from his family..

There are an average of 3 (three) documented steroid deaths per year in the US.

So, this story is chock full of erroneous info and very irresponsible, alarmist 'reporting'

I wonder if the autopsy toxicology report has come out.

He died of brain swelliing.

The issue is that this young man thought he was taking steroids, he told the ambulence drivers he had been taking steroids.

The clinical presentation has things  that do fit with hyperacute liver failure, what caused the acute liver failure remains to be determined.

Clinical presentation

ALF usually presents with malaise, nausea and jaundice. The interval between the onset of jaundice and the onset of encephalopathy depends on the aetiology and is used to classify ALF:

hyperacute liver failure (7 days between onset of jaundice and encephalopathy)

acute liver failure (8–28 days)

subacute liver failure (5–12 weeks).

This classification has implications for the prognosis and incidence of cerebral oedema, which is more common in hyperacute failure.

As liver failure progresses, encephalopathy becomes the characteristic feature.

The grading of encephalopathy is described in Figure 2. The mechanism of encephalopathy is not fully understood.

Ammonia, false neurotransmitters and endogenous benzodiazepine ligands that enhance the effect of the inhibitory transmitter ?-aminobutyric acid have been proposed as causes.

its worse in sweden. Way worse.

They just did a huge research about what teens thought about suppliments. Ofc almost everyone though it was ok.

Then in the arcticle it said 88% OF SWEDISH TEENS APPROVE THE USE OF STEROIDS WE HAVE TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT.

Not mentioning they asked about normal suppliments NOT steroids.

And thats from the biggest swedish newspaper.

Possibly, there are other drugs that have been implicated in hyper-acute renal failure:  Paracetamol, diuretics, MAOIs, halothane, isoniazid, phenytoin.

More people die from paracetamol overdose than E overdose.

STERIOD WILL KILL WITH OVERDOSES, AND IT TAKE WEEKS TILL ALL HIS ORGANS WILL FAIL TO FUCTION ( MULTI ORGANS FAILURE ), HIGH DOSES OF STERIOD ON DAILY BASIS WITHOUT SUPERVISION, LEAD TO FITS, BRAIN OEDEMA, RENAL, AND LIVER FAILUE. SUDDEN DEATH MAY BE DUE TO TAKEN HIGH DOSES OF DIURITICS ( ALDACTONE, OR LASIX ) WHICH LEADS TO SEVERE DEHYDRATION, AND HEART ATTACK.

Yes, quite moronic. How are we supposed to rebuild our empire when the London press is burdened with such intellectual midgets?  :P

What a shame! Took enough "steroids" to end up like this, but apparently not enough to build any amount of muscle at all. He looks like he'd never touched a weight in his life!

Dear WEIBK with all due respect because you always post with honesty and knowledge burt this time i must disagree with you, steroid abuse would need to be for many many years until causing sickness or in rare cases death, this young British man died very quickly from just taking some pills, i truly believe they were not steroids and like many others have said recreational drugs which he thought were steroids, sadly steroids will be blamed again.

That roided-out muscleman could definitely have overtaken Ronnie Coleman and Markus Ruhl as a mass monster. He could have been bigger than Trey "No Lats" Brewer by 21. He could have been 350 lbs with abs by 23. Too bad the roids done him in so early! PIP!  :'(

Idiot journalists.  >:(  "Steroids" do not kill, unless you're talking about decades of abuse and the toll it takes on certain organs.  Whatever was in the pills other than steroids was what killed him.  That's the risk you take with black-market substances.   In a way, though, the illegalty of steroids is exactly what makes them dangerous.  If the laws were changed, and everyone using steroids got them from a legit licenses pharmacy and was monitored by a doc, they would be 100% safe.
