Another good thing to do is buy a few hamburgers for a couple of dollars at a fast food place and give it to them.
I prefer when they're honest. Hey, if you want to buy a quart of beer - tell me. I may buy one of my own. Homeless people need a buzz, too

If I have some extra food that is the only thing I will give them.  If i get candy for whatever reason I give that to them too.

Very good advice. You won't risk that they spend the cash on things like alcohol.

I have a friend that was hit by a train when he was a kid and he lived. He has tramatic brain injuries and this guy rides his bike every where. He broke is arm once and couldn't ride the bike so he pushed himself around town in a wheelchair with one arm. He has worked out at the gym for years. That's where I met him. He has had a rough life. He has been mugged several times. He undrestands that women don't want him and that gets him down. But he doesn't abuse alcohol or do drugs.

I feel even lazier now.

Do you give to homeless people?

Absolutely not, never in a million years!
I WILL (and do) give to the local homeless shelters and other charities that help those who are down on their luck, but giving money to panhandlers does nothing but encourage panhandling.  The beggars at streetcorners are just looking for alcohol, drug, or cigarette money.  If they want food or shelter, they can go to one of the shelters I do donate to and they will be provided for.  Streetcorner panhandlers make a city look seedy, and create a traffic hazard.  The practice should be outlawed.

I wouldn`t mind if they bought alcohol if it makes them happy.

We're in one of the richest countries in the world,
but the minimum wage is lower than it was thirty five years ago.
There are homeless people everywhere.
This homeless guy asked me for money the other day.
I was about to give it to him and then I thought he was going to use it on drugs or alcohol.
And then I thought, that's what I'm going to use it on.
Why am I judging this poor bastard.
People love to judge homeless guys. Like if you give them money they're just going to waste it.
Well, he lives in a box, what do you want him to do? Save it up and buy a wall unit?
Take a little run to the store for a throw rug and a CD rack? He's homeless.
I walked behind this guy the other day.
A homeless guy asked him for money.
He looks right at the homeless guy and says why don't you go get a job you bum.
People always say that to homeless guys like it is so easy.
This homeless guy was wearing his underwear outside his pants.
Outside his pants. I'm guessing his resume isn't all up to date.
I'm predicting some problems during the interview process.
I'm pretty sure even McDonalds has a "underwear goes inside the pants" policy.
Not that they enforce it really strictly, but technically I'm sure it is on the books.

Maximizing happiness should be the goal here, NOT judging what YOU think he should do with the money.  Ask him next time, "if I give you this money, what can you do with it that will make you most happy and give you the longest enjoyment?"

Afterall, what is the goal of life other than to survive, learn, teach, invent and maximize happiness for yourself and others?

Debussey does not think supplying alcohol would help them maximize their happiness.

But Debussey believes that maximizing happiness = the best thing to do in life.

As far as I'm concerned, if they want drugs or alcohol, they need to earn it by earning the money themselves.  If you earned the money, you can do whatever you want with it, including waste it on vices.  But if you're relying on the charity of others, you don't have the right to take those liberties.

One could always just go to the local shelter or something and put in a few volunteer hours :D Many homeless people needs others to talk to.

How does one determine what "earn" means and who sets the standards?  Where is the "earn and deserve" manual?

What if a homeless man was a former veteran who took a few bullets to save another, who later would go on to become a doctor saving lives?

Would he have earned it then?  When and how do you judge earning?  What is earning?  Is it arbitrary in some cases?  If  you think earning is merely passage of time, (hours worked at a job), versus saving someones life 30 years ago, how did you determine one is more deserving of the title "earned" over the other?

I agree with this.  I give to the homeless a lot and have on many occassions say down and talked with them.  We can all say that everyone has choices in life but that is ignoring almost everything else that we know about life-that our experiences often dictate our ability to make choices and how we live our lives.  Without fail, the homelessn I've talked to(usually alcoholic in the country I live in) have all had it WAY harder than most.  And yes, of course there are a lot of people that have had it hard, but they often show the same base problems with different symptoms in adulthood-whereas these men and women turned to alcohol and maybe crime for comfort, others turned to money and a sense of authority over others....same disorder, different symptoms.

I knew a guy who used to keep pop top canned food in his car and give it to them at redlights.

I'm using the word "earn" in the traditional economic sense.  He provides something of value (his labor, or a good or service), and someone gives him cash in exchange for it.  The cash is then his to spend as he pleases.

(but you already knew that, and are just being argumentative.  ;))
