$alary! He makes how much?!?!?

If you work for a public institution in a state like Florida your salary and benefits are public information.  Anyone can go online and see exactly what your compensation is as long as they know your name and where to look.  Some people endorse this kind of disclosure because, they say, it makes salary inequities less likely—especially for women and minorities who tend to suffer from “salary discrimination.”  Still, even the people who advocate for this kind of openness do not want their own salaries disclosed.

The President of the University of South Florida, Judy Genshaft makes $395,000.00 but she is not the school’s highest paid employee (she is not even in the top 30).  That honor goes to Dermatology professor Neil Fenske who makes $1,325,150.00.  Next, comes David Smith in the Department of Surgery at $843,514.00...  If you could see salary of your boss or coworkers with the click of a mouse would you?

Salary disclosure is a fact of life most public employees have to live with.  Should the private sector follow suit?  How would you feel if your own salary were made public?
