Chicago tribune -- Jay Cutler

The 'other' Jay Cutler
As quarterback Jay Cutler nears his first Chicago Bears training camp, we talk to bodybuilder Jay Cutler
By Jonathon Berlin | Tribune reporter
July 22, 2009

One Jay Cutler is the Bears' new quarterback -- a pressure-packed job in a Bears-crazed city.

The other Jay Cutler is a world-champion bodybuilder, with bulging muscles and a stellar résumé (jaycutler.com).

With Bears training camp still more than a week away, the Windy City has plenty of time to get to know its new QB, but how often do we cross paths with someone of Schwarzenegger-esque proportions?

With that in mind, Jay Cutler the bodybuilder took a few minutes to talk with The Talk.

On training

Cutler is in the gym four times a day and eats seven times a day -- once every 2 1/2 hours. "I've got to hold on to my muscle and burn off all my body fat. A bodybuilder needs to eat perfectly. [When training,] I eat the same foods at the same time, every day, all prepared at home."

Bodybuilding vs. football

Bodybuilders try to build as much muscle as possible, Cutler said, while football players work on stability and balance. "Pro athletes wouldn't want to put on a ton of muscle," but bodybuilders don't mind because they have "no speed and no agility."

On music

Rather than "Bear Down, Chicago Bears," this Jay Cutler favors Linkin Park for his performances. "I like harder music that shows my physique."

Advice for his namesake

"I think he's a great asset to Chicago, for him to come in there and immediately be a leader. He just needs to stay cool and collected and do his job."
