Contacts/Glasses, since I was like 20 or so I think?

Have considered looking into Lasik, I think it may be partly covered by some insurances now?

5 years. was thinking about laser, but maybe can hold out for some of the newer technology down the road that doesnt involve cutting, shaving like laser.

I got PRK this last November.  PRK is similar to lasik but there is no incision done to the eye so heavy lifting, fighting, snowboarding, any sports that may cause pressure or harm to the eye will cause problems.  Basically with Lasik they make a small incision, lift the flap of "skin" and laser your eye, then bring the flap back over and fuse it together.  Almost no pain and near perfect vision by the next day...the skin acts as a bandage but you will always have that little incision.  In most cases this does not pose any complications but I wanted to powerlift and didn't want to chance it so I choose PRK.

WIth PRK they laser off that outer skin, do the laser, then you have to wear a special contact for like a week while the skin regrows.  When all is said and done your eyes have no incisions, it is just like your eye before surgery but your vision is improved.  It take up to 6 months for your vision to fully correct but I could drive by the time they took the contacts out and my vision was basically as good as it was going to get at about 2 months.

PRK, depending on the person, can either be relatively pain-free to extremely painful-this is the main reason they don't recommend it for everyone.  Just depends on how your body deals with regenerating that skin....I reacted poorly and was in INTENSE pain for 2-3 days after the surgery.  I would do it again (PRK) as I have had no problems with my eyes but I would premedicate more and have some very good stuff on hand post surgery...

glasses and contacts since I was knee high to a tad pole, i was the 4 eyes when I was younger  ;D

I have a condition with my right eye that prevents me from getting lasik at least for the time being. I would in a heart beat though I cant imagine what it would be like to wake up and actually be able to see without putting on my glasses.

What kind of condition?

I know my eyesight is going but I am finding many many excuses why and avoiding the eye exam.

I can't do glasses!!  :'(

I heard blue eyes are the worst for eye problems... anybody else hear this?

I believe its called keratoconus or something like that basically its a kind of like a stigmatism but slightly irregular my cornea is forming a cone and thinning in the center.

Ive been told that as long as the shape of my cornea is still changing then lasik isnt an option supposedly it generally stops after the age of 30 or so but I had one eye doctor tell me I was eventually pretty much going to go blind and that I could have a corneal transplant but thats its so who knows...

Ive never heard that about blue eyes I have heard that about lighter eye colors though that could be an urban myth though.

p.s. glasses can be very attractive and you can wear contacts the majority of the time these days they make contacts you can sleep in.

I've never heard that about blue eyes, but a Dr. once told me that sometimes it can literally happen overnight where you wake up and your vision has changed.  I thought that had happened to me yesterday.  All day everything was blurry and I could not for the life of me get focused.  Someone suggested it was because the pollen count was really high  :-\   I'm back to normal today - my normal which isn't the greatest these days.

When the day comes, I think I'll do glasses.  Contacts seem like a PIA and surgery scares the crap out of me.

as a kid i used to run into walls a lot (i know..funny! ;D but true)

then in 1984 or 86 when we came to the US (to settle but we didn't like it...so turned into a 1 yr vacation :-\ ) the doctors discovered that my geek ass us almost blind in one eye(lazy eye)...solution..patch up my good eye and force the lazy one to work harder and heal itself...

sooo basically i dont remember MOST of that 1 yr vacation (including disney land/world/sea world and yadayada)  >:(

i tried contacts for a month...pfft..too much of a hassel
so i wear glasses all the time (except when i take pix for getbig  :P )

i cant get lasic...i need a lense implant....fuck that...i'm fine with my glasses...

although my girl tells me they r coke bottles and i should be able to see the future  :D

a friend of mine got it done in japan..lasik i mean..now he has like 19/20 vision..which is i guess better than 20/20....i believe him cause he can read a street sign from 3 blocks away while i practically have to drive up to one :-\

Well, Bengal tigers that come in the white variant, are rare, yet they are partially deaf and blind...and they have blue eyes, there maybe some truth to it...

BTW I have glasses/contacts, een my calling card...

Yeah, they say you leave the Drs. office and you can see clearly!  ;D Glad to hear it worked for you.
Found out last week that I'm not a good LASIK candidate, and contacts would be a problem too.  Going shopping for glasses this weekend  :-\

Straight after the op it is like looking through valseline and you are very very very light sensitive.
Bye the next morning my right eye was sharp and the left one OK
Bye the second morning both are sharp but I am struggling to adjust when walking from outside into the house kinda thing.
But the days are still early and I am sure my body will ajust, I will have to get mild reading glasses though, that I did now before the op.

Saw this article about the FDA looking into negative effects of Lasik, so I thought I'd post it.

FDA to study negative effects of Lasik eye surgery

By MATTHEW PERRONE, AP Business Writer Matthew Perrone, Ap Business Writer   –  Thu Oct 15, 6:33 pm ET

WASHINGTON – The Food and Drug Administration announced plans Thursday to study the scope of problems connected with laser eye-correcting surgery, which include blurred vision and dry eyes.

The FDA says it will work with the National Eye Institute and the Department of Defense to determine the percentage of patients who experience negative side effects following surgery.

The first phase of the project is already under way, with plans for an online questionnaire to help patients gauge their quality of life following surgery, according to an FDA statement.

The project will also include a clinical trial tracking patients who undergo the procedure, which is expected to conclude by 2012.

"This study will enhance our understanding of the risks of Lasik and could lead to a reduction in patients who experience adverse effects," said Dr. Jeffrey Shuren, the acting head of FDA's medical device division.

An estimated 6 million Americans have undergone Lasik surgery, which permanently reshapes the cornea, a clear layer covering the eye. There are no guarantees of 20/20 vision and the long-term safety of the procedure is still unknown.

Ophthalmology societies report that about 95 percent of patients are satisfied with their new vision.

But a small number of patients have reported permanent damage to their eyes following the surgery, including double vision, dry eye and halos around objects at night.

The FDA agreed to look into the problems in 2008 after years of complaints. The agency said last summer it received 140 reports of Lasik-related problems between 1998 and 2006.

Lasik procedures have fallen off in the past year as consumers cut back on the pricey surgeries, which can cost between $1,500 and $5,000

Makers of Lasik lasers include Advanced Medical Optics Inc., Alcon Inc., and Bausch and Lomb.

Also on Thursday, the FDA announced warning letters sent to 17 Lasik surgery centers for inadequate adverse event reporting procedures. Regulators periodically send letters to facilities that don't follow federal guidelines for reporting patient complaints.

"The inspections did not identify problems with the use of the Lasik devices at these facilities," the FDA stated.

More inspections of Lasik centers are planned in coming months, according to the FDA release.
Almost always, yes.

What about RK?

Does that involve cutting the cornea?  Doc said she wouldn't let anyone cut my corneas because it would probably cause more problems for me - especially my "dry eye(s)".
