Simple Q... Why didn't Bush prosecute KSM and friends?
« on: November 16, 2009, 08:07:25 PM »
He got these guys in 2001/2002.

He pumped them for info for a year.  Then he let them sit for 5 or 6 years.  He could have tried them under military court and hanged them years ago.  Instead, he let them sit there long after their intel value was done, never trying them.

Why did he choose not to prosecute them?  Why leave it in the hands of the 'next guy' who could let them escape?  Bush made it his singular goal to keep the USA safe - why leave the prosecution of bad guys to chance?

I don't expect an answer... we'll hear how Obama sucks, and that's fine.  But why did Bush fail to finish the job on these turds?

I have no idea, but it does seem then completely screwed up in delaying these trials.  Once they got everything from this guy and he asked for the death penalty, they could have easily accomodated  his wish with a firing suqad or hanging.

My own opinion is that he knew what the evidence was - lacking, etc - and decided he'd make it the next guy's problem.  he let a bice chunk of gitmo bad guys go, and many of them did return to attack us.

I guess, like Obama making his healthcare plan start in 2013, it was easier to do the gung-ho battlefield stuff, but making a legal case was going to be harder.

Hell, maybe there isn't enough evidence against these guys to try them in a military tribunal, and they know it - so they're trying them in NYC so that they'll be convicted and hung on emotion alone.  Wouldn't that be a MFer lol... what if Obama knows this and is taking all this heat, because they have no case in a military trial.

The simplest answer would be that there weren't enough of a case. Trials don't have to be public so secrecy is not an issue.
War trials are held regularly in Hague. From the day a war criminal is captured it doesn't take more than a couple of months for the trial to begin usually.
So my guess is - they could not get a conviction. Either because they got the wrong guy or because the evidence isn't good enough.

just my dumb guess.

Bush knew that the Gitmo thing was one big clusterf*ck, so he was waiting to drop it into the lap of either McCain or Obama.
