You are talking about something entirely different. Sometimes you walk away from a fight because it's just not worth it. A few months ago I had unintentionally cut someone off in traffic. I didn't even realize it until the fella followed me into the parking lot. He pulled along side me and started cursing me out. When I figure out why he was so mad I told him it was not intentional and apologized. It wasn't enough and he keep going off on me. I took a deep breathe and then just said, "Fuck it." I got out of my truck and told him to get out of his car. When he stepped out I was please because he's exactly the kind of guy whose ass I wanted to kick. He was wearing those arrogant graphic tees, had tats all over him, was maybe 5'6" buck fifty at the most. He was maybe 19-20 yo with an attitude that comes with that generation. As I approached him I could tell he was having second thoughts. Acting tough and being tough are two different worlds. But it was too late for the punk. Time to learn a lesson. As I got closer I noticed there was someone else in the passenger seat. It was a little girl, maybe 8 yo. She was all curled up in a ball and looked scared as hell. I asked him, "Who's that?" He said it was his sister.

I looked at him and then again at his sister and walked away.

That wasn't a matter of guts. Sometimes other factors come into play. It's not always cut and dry. You're right about that. But it's not about guts or courage. You never want to completely lose your humanity to your emotions and pride. Maybe that's what Stark meant but didn't articulate it the way he wanted. I don't think English is his first language.
