Butter or Butter Substitutes?
« on: August 24, 2010, 07:15:24 AM »
I use "I can't believe it's not butter spray" sometimes on my toast and Oatmeal.

Is it worse for you than real butter?

What is a good butter "replacement?"  Don't they make some out of yogurt or something?

Thanks!

When you crunch the numbers, a little real butter here and there won't make any difference whatsoever, as long as your food isn't swimming in it.

That said, I do use ICBINB spray on stuff like corn and toast.

I tried the spray once - didn't care for the taste/aftertaste  :-\  I dunno - seemed fake.  I do like to use Butter Buds to sprinkle on eggs and steamed veggies.

The yogurt spread is

Never tried it, but actually sounds tastier to me.

For the one time a year I have corn on the cob, I brush or spray with olive oil and sprinkle with butter buds.

I'll try it out.
Have you tried cooking with it?

And, did you ever use the mayo (or Miracle Whip - I forget which) made with olive oil?

And, by law, they do not have to divulge what percentage of the "Liquid Vegetable Oil" is olive oil.
Being last within the parentheses, we know that olive oil constitutes the least amount of the veggie oils.
But, of course, by including it as part of a "blend" for lack of a better word, they can list it towards the top of the ingredients label.

What does her highness think of said label?

Butter substitutes are all much worse than butter. Just use coconut oil - dende oil - for cooking. Your arteries will thank you for it.

smm- coconut oil is like 80% saturated fat...  why would you recommend it?

stella... it owuld depend on the butter substitute.. some of them are better for you. but not all of them taste much like butter. a little butter here and there isnt going to kill you if you must have that exact taste.

i used some butter substitute on some steaks i was flash frying/ baking  and it came out wonderful..

The saturated fatty acids in coconut oil are not bad for you: they don't raise plasma tryglycerides and cholesterol like other saturated fatty acids.

As for why I recommend coconut oil and not other oils, it boils to the fact that coconut oil is the most stable oil when heated and doesen't suffer structural changes like other oils.

i forget. smart spread? something like that. it was olive, soy, and canola if i remember correctly. i would have used regular butter, but we didnt have any. the substitute worked just as good.  flash fry/seared both sides of each steak for a minute on super high heat and a pan full of butter, then put the steaks on a baking pan (the kind of baking pan that has room for water to be put underneath the meat) with dollops of butter on top of them, bake at 350-400 for 20-30 minutes or untill done. the steaks taste to rich and juicy this way. the butter makes em so rich..

Saw this one burger joint that claims to add one stick of melted butter per hamburger bun.  Or the one place in San Antonio that makes giant cinnamon rolls. they add a dozen sticks of butter to a tray of a dozen rolls.
