Painting the ceiling
« on: September 07, 2010, 06:03:04 AM »
I just finished painting my new place (took all weekend)

the walls are a dark silver/grey similar to the picture below and my plan is to put in dark hardwood flooring

in another thread Newmom said not to paint the ceiling anything other than white but I wonder if it will look out of place, all things considered

should I leave the ceiling white or paint it a dark shade to complete the atmosphere?

white would ne nice, but you could tint it slightly so it won't be as stark.

I've always heard to always leave ceilings white. I don't know why. I think you could get away with any light color though. It sucks painting ceilings though because I can always see the lighter/missed spots when it dries lol.  :D

Thanks for posting those Schwepps.  Now Big Poppa can see how the darker colored ceilings make the ceiling look much shorter like it is pressing down on the room ala Indiana Jones cave style.
 :)

(kitchen isn't bad though!)

Notice that in the original picture you posted, the floor and ceiling are lighter than the walls.  Actually, notice in all the pictures that the rooms are not entirely dark.  What is the "look" you're going for?

Looks like it's a bus or something too.

Big Pop, I like dark hardwood flooring.

Hoarders would love these places just for the storage no painting required.

I painted our bedrooms grey....one dark grey, one middle to dark grey and one lighter.  All ceilings are "white."  Trim is "white" as well.

2 of them have hardwood flooring that was here when we moved in (one has old grey carpet)...it's a combo of stained white and red oak I think.  Looks good w/the grey.  The furniture in one is a dark cherry (I think)  Looks good w/the grey but probably not be modern enough for you.

I'm starting to question whether I should get hardwood at all

it sounds weird, but I'd prefer a more minimalist and "sterile" (might be a bad word) look which natural materials really conflict with, which is why I was thinking going black to eliminate the natural look

I'm going to Rona/Home Hardware this weekend to look at flooring and get a better idea
