Training for the Sydney Olympics - Discuss
« on: November 06, 2010, 04:23:19 AM »
Hey Keith, Out of curiosity can you tell us how you were training for the Sydney Olympics? From memory it was for discus...

I had the privilege of going to school with one of Australia's best HammerThrowers and he was a beast!!!...

Also what do you remember what you actually threw?

interesting I didn't know he was a discuss thrower.  I threw 170 and change in State Qualifier in high school.

What method did you incorporate Keith?  Discuss is hard since 90% is technique.

196' I threw.  I moved back to LA to train and 3 months later is when I got bit.  A coach from a school called Orange Coast College saw me training at a local high school while he was in Hawaii pon vacation.  He told me if I was serious and wanted to train with some real track and field athletes that I could come train with them.  he said he was spome Olympic athletes (runners).  I was wanted to do the discus and the shot putt but just wasn't doing the shot putt very well and I sucked.  I liked the discus.  trained almost everyday at Kalani High which was right down the street from my house.  And yes I am sure I will have my haters come on here and say bullshit.  So this will be the only thing I say about it.  Everyone else knew what I was doing.

Holy Shit!!!... 196'

In case anyone is curious a throw of 196' would of put Keith in the top 25 in the world. Rink Babka from the USA threw a 196' to get 22nd all time greatest throw...

I think you should of trained for it...

Believe or not.  And that are the exact words that coach said.  He said if I was doing that on my own then with coaching I could possibly break the wporld record which I think was like 234 or something like that fromn some gy in Gemrany.  That was the fartheset I threw.  I measure out on the football field marks.  I put gasoline marks that killed the grass so I could see what I was throwing.  I had several rubber training discus and two competition and one overweighted.  When I called the place to order them I had no idea there was so many to chose from.  Different weights, thickness, materials, diameter, with metel center, without, wooden, metal, rubber.  Holy shit.  I told the guy I wanted to try and make the Olympic team and give me whatever I need to practice.  So that is what he sent me.  I had this bag I carry around everywhere I went that carried one of the competition ones.  I kept it with me all the time.  I met some shot putt guy one time and he said he always carried his shot wherever he went.  SO I did too.  I was throwing over 175 almost everytime I tried.  My biggest thing was technique.  I was 293 working down to 275 and trying to keep my strength.  I was riding the bike 28 miles a day 3 to 4 times a week and on weekends walk with a 120 lb. tire around Diamond Head.  My cardio was awesome and I still could bench 500 (barely though) but 405 was easy.  I stretched constantly and anyone who knows me knows how limber I was.  I thought at 275 I had a shot.  I could pick up alot more speed in my spin which is what I was working on the most.  The release was also something I wanted to get down.  When the coach saw me and offered me the chance that is when I decided to move back to LA.  I moved in with my friend and a few months later got bit.  end of story

So you got bit in 98, Keith?

I got bit 3 days before the 1998 Long Beach grand Prix.  The reason I remember is because someone had given me VIP Pit Passes.  When I got to the hospital I told the doctor I needed to get out by the weekend.  He sida we'll see and it ended up 21 or 22 days.

By the way I never ever competed in any event.  I was doing this all on my own till that coach came up to me.  My idea was that if I can get my throw consistant over 220' then I could go almost to any college or coach show him what I could do and somehow they would help me get on a team or compete.  But in reality I never really ever thought about any of that cause unless I got up there at that distance I wouldn't be able to do anything.  And I woudln't have tried to so it unless I knoew I could break the record or at least come really close.  I had would have been almost 42 years old at the Sydney Olympics.  I started training in the beginning of 1997

175 average is a good throw especially for just starting Keith.  170 was my best ever.  Usually I would be between 140-160.  Great for high school but ain't shit outside of it.

ah yes, the legend that was dicsovered on the playground by a coach that happned to be passing by,

a movie or after school special was made about this very thing, in every sport, in every way you can think of.

there may be over 100 movies depicting this very scenario, but it is indeed a fantastic and original story,
also, i was training for the 2000 olympics as well, over at my high school, for the 800 meter, one of coaches , or assistants, or hell maybe it was the janitor , told me in the right hands i go go very far, maybe even world champion,  i didnt make it through the prelims though,
