Get a clue: really good jobs are found via word of mouth, networking, etc.--not from anonymous postings on job hunt websites.  Many moons ago I suggested a Job forum here for job talk, finding work, letter/resume tips, career moves, etc. in and out of the fitness world, but the powers that be weren’t interested, but with posts like these…

unfortunatley the network connections I have are mostly for retail and restaurant work.  Both of which I am trying to run like hell away from.  I am also looking into specific company websites and searching the listings they have posted.

unfortunatley the network connections I have are mostly for retail and restaurant work.  Both of which I am trying to run like hell away from.  I am also looking into specific company websites and searching the listings they have posted.

Whose fault is that?

The other day I told one of my bar buddies to “upgrade the company you keep”  (actually, I’ve been telling him that for years, but he doesn’t seem to get it).  Quality people come into your life all the time, whether or not they stay is a function of you and your behavior.  What kind of impressions are you making in person, via phone, in writing, via third parties?  All of these things determine whether or not quality people bring you into their circles.  These circles are how you meet other quality people, make good job contacts, etc.  Having people like this in your life is important because in situations like the one you are in now (job hunting in a bad economy) you should be able to pick up the phone and tell people in your circle that you are “looking” and they will go to work on your behalf.

The last two people I hired were hired that way.  In fact, that’s how I got my current job, and I know that’s how I’ll get my next job.  If you want to flip burgers or ring a cashier for the rest of your life feel free to ignore me, but if you want upgrade your job prospects, then upgrade the company you keep.  In other words, upgrade yourself.

There are guys on this board I would not hesitate to hang with, make a phone call for, or introduce to my A list circle.  Doug_Steele, Alex23, Topskin, Giordano, etc. have shown themselves to be smart, educated, fun but not mean-spirited or bigoted.  How many people (of influence) would say this about you?  When I was a professor, I used to remind my students, “someone is always watching you.  And most often, it is not who you think it is.  You are always making impressions on the people around you.  Never forget that.”

While you are job hunting on sites like monster, hotjobs, etc. someone else is picking up the phone and being networked right into the job you are dreaming about.  This happens in my organization every day… and it is happening all across the country.

Good luck with your job hunt. 8)

well considering 13 years of restuarant work it's a given that most of my connectiosn are tied to that industry.  As for the people I consider my firends and choose to spend time with, they are all of good quality.  I'm actally looking at going to more events/functions, in the meantie I have to use what is available to me.

As for people of influences response to me as a person, anyone that knows me, knows that I am light hearted, giving and very respectful to those I come in contact with.  As for our getbig community, I doubt that there are may here that would think that I am bigoted, or mean.  I do have the occasional let be be funny and say women are evil and that that playing around.  Oh and i an kinda sorta smart too boot.   8)

I think staffing agencies charge a fee and the jobs aren't permanent .. I'm not sure if it's only a few that do that or not

but I know in NYS there's county employment offices that have tons of postings they get called in to them .. you have to see an agent to get the interview but that's the only difficult part .. waiting your turn to see someone and the paperwork they want to see what references and stuff you have

it was an adjustment going from restaurants to a desk job.  Couldn't stand it it at first.  Being in etail sucks balls.  I think the appeal of not working holidays and weekends and holidays is a nice benefit.

what kind of work are you looking to get into bro? office job isnt to specific...

simplyhired.com, indeed.com(its alot like simplyhired), linkedin.com also look at company websites as well...

Bay is right about networking but I wouldnt take it to the extent that he does, im not going to not hang out with a friend b/c I think others may not like me b/c of it...

Ask around to friends and family if they know of anything, ask them to keep their ears open for you...

If you went to college or junior college they may have a job board so that could help more so than a random internet job board.

While I know its unconventional cold calling companies that you have a desire to work for is another way...

most importantly keep at it and keep your head up, it can be down right depressing and disheartening sending out resume after resume, making call after call and getting little or nothing to show for it. I did it for months before finding a job and know first hand how crappy it can make you feel but it will happen sooner or later if you just keep at it.

I think you might be missing Bay's point.

Networking is a lifestyle.

Robert Kiyosaki says it best: "Rich people build networks, ...while the poor look for work"
It's not about 'hey I wonder what they can do for me', ...it's about building a team, a support structure,
...it 'what can we do for each other' By building a TEAM, ...Together Everyone Achieves More

without a doubt it is but that doesnt mean you kick friends to the curb  ::)

LOL hun there is a very broad line between networking and coming off like a slimey used car salesman...bay came off as the later...

yeah that f*cker  ;)

I had a desk job when I worked at a tech company.  I was an analyst.  It would be nice to get back in to something like that again.  Yes Jags, Kiyosaki was/is right and the point was understood by me.  However like I said the friends I have are not the pull you down type.  Also most of the connections are restaurant peeps and that lifestyle is not conducive to the life I want.  I've been looking at some specific companies however I don't meet the criteria for some and others really don't have openings.  I have two worthjless ass degrees.  But I was thinking about trying out the alumni factor and see if they had job listings/placements etc.

I think your college job boards will be the best bet to be honest as far as internet boards go. Depends on how big the city and college is that you went to but companies that post on those boards tend to do so with more of a specific purpose.

LMAO the thing is that to some networking comes naturally if youre generally open to talking to strangers, seem like a good person and have an upbeat personality which I do and I would assume that migs does if he has worked in the restaruant business you dont really have to think about all the misc. factors you do...Another aspect of just trying to be a good person and open is that you generally attract others that are good ppl, no matter whether their status or position is indicative of this or not  ::)

I wouldnt recommend anyone unless they were top of their class in what they do if i percieved them to be the slimey person you come off as(no offense I dont know you personally). I recommend off of character first and dumping friends b/c they arent conducive to your monetary success isnt something i consider good moral character...

but hey let me know how that works out for you when youre wealthy and have no real friends. I think Ill stick to true friends and get all the wealth I can that way...but to each their own
