Health Care Premiums Could Reach $23,342 by 2020

By: Jon Walker Friday December 3, 2010 5:45 am

The cost crisis in our health care system simply can’t be overstated. The rapid growth in cost is the driving force behind our projected long-term public debt and the growth in private health insurance premiums threaten to cripple private industry. The Commonwealth Fund is out with a new study showing just how quickly the situation is worsening.

National surveys have found that family premiums for employer-sponsored health coverages increased 52 percent from 2003 to 2009, while median family income rose 13 percent. Such a rapid increase in the cost of employer-sponsored health benefits has forced difficult choices at workplaces across the country. Studies indicate that slower growth in wages and lower savings for retirement (worker and employer contributions) have been part of the trade-off to preserve health benefits. Despite such trade-offs, the monthly cost of premiums paid by workers and their families is up, consuming an ever-greater share of any wage increases they might receive.

Health care premiums have grown roughly four times faster than income. This simply isn’t sustainable without crushing government and private budgets. And if the problem is not truly dealt with, that is what will happen:

As of 2009, the average premium was $13,027 a year for family coverage for private sector employers, ranging from $11,000 to over $14,000 across states. If insurance premiums for employer-sponsored health plans in each state continued to grow at the same average annual rate seen from 2003 to 2009, the average premium for family coverage would rise to $23,342 by 2020—an increase of 79 percent.

The study looked at what would happen if the new health care reform law reduced the annual projected premium growth rate by one percentage point or 1.5 percentage points. In the former, average premiums would reach only $21,019 in 2020, and in the later they would reach only $19,938.

Even with optimistic projections, the new health care law would still see premiums growing faster than income, and we’d still have by far the most costly health care on earth. This means, even assuming health care reform works well, which I highly doubt, the ever-growing cost of our health care premiums will force it to remain a critical political issue for years. It has not be fully dealt with.MORE

Your grammar sucks brah :)

But we are stuck with obamacare because the repubs didn't move to fix shit first.  Obama's crap sandwich looked delicious to a man starved for 12 years of repub congress and rising prices without any effort.

If I ignore my woman for 10 years... she's gonna bang the first homeless guy that asks for change with a smile.  it's my own damn fault, ya know?

They seem overjoyed with Obamacare ::) Again the HMO is the cause, but instead of abolishing that crap the government just keeps making it worse, I never though I would be amazed at the stupidity of politicians, but they did it.

Agreed.  Health insurance is a fraud and any true healthcare reform should have addressed this issue.  I'd like to see a national movement started where people drop their health care providers.

What you posted has nothing to do with Obama. What you are seeing is simple capitalistic GREED. Doctors charge high fees for service billed to insurance companies, Insurance companies charge companies high fees to cover their employees, the employees are charged fees to help pay for the coverage, pharmaceutical companies charge high fees for their medications for patients, hospitals charge high fees for service and rooms out of pure greed which is passed onto the insurance companies and they in turn try to keep a certain profit margin, so they begin teh cycle all over again of charging doctors and policy holders higher fees...and on it goes. With or without Obama you would end up paying the same OVER INFLATED COSTS....

THAN CAPITALISM FOR THAT

Forcing people to buy health insurance is not capitalism.  If we eliminated health insurance, there would be a capitalistic market with doctors and hospitals competing for patients.

Wanna bet? It all depends on which side of the aisle you are on.

The insurance companies will make out like bandits as they see their profits SOAR!!! with this new system. The customer/patient/employer on the other hand will be robbed by these bandits. It is the same one sided capitalism like you have in all of your industries. BTW if you eliminate insurance you will not develop a capitalistic market...what you are thinking of is a FREE MARKET...BIG DIFFERENCE. Capitalistic market has given you what you see and have now...Expensive products and services of which few can afford. A free market economy will force FAIR PRODUCT PRICES AND SERVICES!!!

This Administration is a sinking ship.  The stimulus was supposed to curb unemployment.  Obamacare was supposed to lower costs.  Failure on both counts.

That remains to be seen tard.  The increase in revenue may be offset by the requirements insurance companies will now be forced to bear - such as people with pre-existing conditions, spending requirements, etc.  It could put many companies under, could drive-up premiums to unthinkable amounts, and on and on.

There's a lot of presumptions and flat out assumptions that were made when modeling this thing and we're going to have to see where the chips fall - unless the Republicans bag this thing (which will be good, provided they address the problems in healthcare).
