Military bros need help
« on: January 27, 2011, 03:53:14 PM »
I've been really thinking hard for the last 6 months about joining the military. I have a degree in health, physical education, and recreation  ::) boy what a waste. I feel like I'm pretty far behind people my age. I want to get into something that will set me up with a retirement plan ect. I have always been a huge fan of the military. When I was little I always played dress up. I still do that I have a closet full of guns, ammo, and other cool shit.

I was thinking of just going for it and joining the army infantry. I feel like I'm the happiest when I have a harder life. When I have structure and I'm making accomplishments. I played sports all through highschool all 3 sports seasons. I played college football. I like working my ass off and then having a couple of hours at night to enjoy just sitting in front of the tv with a fat dip in.

Is 26 years old for me? Last few months I have been running a lot. I'm a pretty damn good athlete once I'm in shape.

Anyone here have any input for me. Thank you.

I have had many friends join and they all have a hard time once they get out.  If you go in then you should retire from the service.  You will still be a young man and drawing a pension provided you live that long.

just wait for a few years till they do conscription again and everyone must fight.

Stay away.  In my country, having had no proper full on wars since 1945, nowadays only sad boys straight from boarding school sign up, they've noone else to look after them.

In your country it's a pension option?  Get outta here, don't go there...

Please please please don't go there till you feel you must make war, not love?

I'm sure you could train to be someone else

Yes you're still young enough. Even if you joined by the age of 27 and can do at least 20 years for retirement. You can still work many years while getting a nice retirement check also. Have you checked with recruiters or spoke to other people you may know that are in the services? Even if you do 4 years, If I'm not mistaken, that's enough years to pay for college

I have been to a coast guard, Navy, and Army recruiter. My boy is in the coast guard it is very hard to get into right now. I have my degree so I wouldn't be going in for the reason of getting my college paid for more schooling is always good though. Things are so competitive everywhere right now. I appreciate it newmom.

Thanks for your concern. I have a lot of people tell me I'm crazy for considering it. It's not for everyone.

thanks for realising that I was simply concerned.

I do not worry, I don't want the wrinkles.

I've changed my mind:  go there if you feel you must, you'd probably be very good at it.  My Grandad fought in that last WW, but he never ever talked about it.

if you do decide to join, here are 2 options...

1)stay as long as you have to, and have a private contractor(tc,xe,dyna) hire you, and buy you from the military...private soldiers just starting out make $520 a day..

2)let it run its course and retire from it...just make it a life long career..

Being a private contractor would be so sick. I would go do that in a second If I had experince.

If you really are into this, look into becoming an officer in the USAF.

God bless people in the Military and all they do for us.

makaveli, do you have any trusted friends you can talk to who have first-hand experience?

Also, have you ever watched the movie "Black Hawk Down?"

It was very hard for me to watch.  I usually really enjoy Military type movies but that one was tough.

Can't watch it.  Actually had a guy I was friends in HS with who was in that shitstorm......talked to him a bit about it when were both home on leave at one point.....you talk about some PISSED off guys who wanted to do nothing more than go back to that hellhole and make them pay for what they did.....but alas, politicians who started it in the first place wouldn't let us finish it.....same as always....

A friend of mine had to pull pieces of Marines out of a rubble pile in Lebanon. Its what the military does.

2 of the main delta operators from the incident that black hawk down is based on are the reason i do, what i do...they were my trainers, and mentors.....still hang out with one of them, and help him train his tactical schools, the other is currently in jordan running all contracted ops..

Don't fall into the trap of thinking "I'm in shape, I can shot a gun really good, I'm tough, so (infantry to be exact) is the place for me". You are obviously a cerebral person because you went (and stayed) in school (and finished). That takes discipline even if you are half a$$ing.

You have other options FBI, CIA, DEA, ATF for starters...and somebody mentioned special forces, delta, seals, rangers..etc those guys are not only bad a$$e$ but they are intelligent also as well as other fields in the military. The goal is to MAKE 20 years to retire..remember

I broke my family male + army infantry history...damn that.

I read the book years ago....in the movie they show one guy goes looking for the downed pilot by himself....don't think that part was in the book.

dont set long term goals at first...remember..war may not be for everyone...he may not want to stay...i would either just get the experience and go private...or like you mentioned..transfer directly from the military to a federal agency once you are established...

a lot of people actually forget that....

out of 100 soldiers 70 should just not be there, 10 are going to fight but be cowards when shit goes wrong, another 10 will be there to loose skill, and strike blindly...3 will stay at the back and watch others work while pretending to give orders, 6 will do the best they can...but 1, just 1 is the actual true warrior....and he is the one that bring the rest together..

A degree in physical education will make you an officer in any of the branches...
