Flexingtonsteel, wes, Pellius (Phil) and Krankenstein thanks for all the well-wishes. I could never keep up with everyone’s changing screen names and gimmick accounts.

Krank I guess you used to post under a different name? What was it?

Thanks for all the welcomes guys. It’s nice to know someone enjoyed my old war stories.

Krank you asked me about the new men’s physique division. As far as standards for physiques I guess it’s cool but let me tell you why I never stepped on-stage after 1980 and never attend competitions. The last competition I attended (outside of the Iron Man Pro since I write for the mag) was when “The Coach” competed a few years ago.

The idea that my (or anyone competing) self acceptance is in the hands of mostly incompetent and often self-serving judges is beyond comprehension to me. I sat across the dinner table with two female judges after a competition here about 8 years ago and listened for an hour and a half while one of them went on and on about each competitor and how this one didn’t bow down and lick the shit out of her ass… so she scored him low and this other competitor had a bad attitude (I guess mirrors don’t exist in her world) so she scored her low…. on and on. Adding another division will never change THAT kind of unethical behavior.

I saw this happen at local shows in the late 70’s I watched it occur at shows in the 80’s and it happens today. I will never give anyone that kind of power over my self-existence. Taking cycles was fun and cool being huge and strong but I never got into bb to be… just big…  or just strong. My parents were grossly overweight and my much older than my half-sister was morbidly obese and I was a skinny kid. I wanted a better body. That’s why I got into bb.

As you saw in the picture I posted today I achieved it and did it while I was off cycle. I don’t need a title or a judging panel for that. Women loved it enough to stuff money into my shorts, I got laid often and I had a great time. Today at 56 I LOVE to train and get guys walking past the trainers at the gym to come over and ask me training advice. I don’t consider myself that big anymore but I guess I still hold enough size to get some respect.

Even today I love the challenge of getting a rep more than last week or getting a pump or the nice soreness after a workout. I still like it when a young tender throws and admiring glance my way. Except today “young tender” include 40 year olds as well as the 20 something’s.

Ah the old dude rants on.

So, what does your routine look like now as compared to a few years ago?  What have you taken out, what have you kept in?  Are there things you do now that you wish you would have done (or not done) years ago?

Where did you post your pic? (no homo)

Page 7 of this thread: http://www.getbig.com/boards/index.php?topic=371524.msg5276649#msg5276649

As I said I was off-cycle for 9 months and even though I had been bigger and stronger, I never looked as good as this. It's not a contest body. It's a "That's what I always wanted to look like body".

Some judge would say well he needs more this or more that or less of this.

Today I train about 4 days a week instead of 5. I break my routine into 3 parts so on the fourth training day of the week, I'm doing the same workout that I did earlier in the week. That means each body part is getting hit 2 times in 8 days. That seems to work for me. Body parts get hit from 6 to 15 sets. I'll do set sets and build it up over about 4 weeks then back it down again. Rep patterns follow from 4 to 15 again cycling the high and low. If I'm doing low reps the reps are much slower. If I'm doing high reps it's much faster on the reps.

Occasionally I'll try a Crossfit or Performance type pf workout for the challenge but I have rotator cuff injuries, an ankle injury and asthma so I have to keep those within my own ability. I do walks outside or climb real stairs or ride a real bike for cardio 3-4 days a week.

You can also follow some of my training ideas and advice on my blog:
http://ironmanmagazine.com/blogs/fast-muscle-building-tips/outdoor-leg-and-cardio-routine.php?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+FastMuscleBuildingTips+%28Fast+Muscle+Building+Tips+by+David+Young%29&utm_content=FeedBurner

The stairs in the picture is in Palos Verdes, CA not too far from where Pellius and I used to train. To bad we really didn't know each other then. But we shared some of the same friends and places.

Finally someone that speaks the truth about this lousy "sport".

There is no such thing as fair competition when the sport is tainted with dirty judges.

Too bad it's not just about crossing a finish line or catching a pass. You either cross the line before the other you don't. It's not someone's opinion, it's a fact (except of course in the case of a very close call).

Personally I'd rather just train with a top guy or lady than see them on-stage. I used to love challenging a training partner for reps or weight in the gym.

This may not be popular on here but I really do like the before and after transformation type stories. Seeing someone put their heart into something and get themselves in shape inspires me. I once trained with a 68 year old retired motorcycle cop. The guy put his heart and soul into his workouts. It was great.

I'll stand behind anyone who's willing to put in the work. THAT is bodybuilding. At least to me it is. Having a bunch of boobs tell someone that even though they did everything right, WE determine the winner because WE'VE been judging for X years is insanity. I'd like to body-slam some of them. Some of the judges are well-meaning and good people but the whole concept is flawed in my opinion.

MaxRep,

I have a pretty good idea how you guys trained back in the day. Every bodypart twice a week and pretty good amount of volume.

But how did you guys eat? Offseason and Precontest.

Seemed like pre contest was pretty low carb all the way. But what did u guys do to grow?

It was a lot of experimenting. Especially for me because I started skinny but as I said earlier my genetics were from obese parents. I’d gain weight and get to sloppy. Most guys at more carbs in the off-season but not a whole lot more. Guy’s like Mike Sable and the Mentzer’s suggested more carb’s but that didn’t work well for me. Rory had me eating more food than I could handle and I felt bloated and stuffed constantly. Vince Gironda had everyone eating a pound of red meat a day and a dozen eggs. John Brown said in a seminar he ate 3 pounds of meat a day. Dave Johns ate 3 dozen eggs a day (yuck) Essentially it was all over the map.

The most effective off season diet I ever followed was right out of Franco Columbo’s "Winning Bodybuilding". That plan allowed me to gain size while maintaining a reasonable degree of hardness. That’s how I was eating for the most part, during the nine months prior to that photo being taken. It's also how I ate off-season during the times I made the most progress. I would imagine that adding in cardio would have made that plan suitable right up to about 6 weeks before a competition. I could see altering it somewhat today (oatmeal instead of morning toast, etc.) would be a good way to go. Maybe take out the cheese tray that he suggested for the afternoon and replace it with a protein shake and oatmeal added in (off-season grow time).

I believe you need to adjust up or down every few weeks as needed. Look at your condition and determine it it's size or fat that your gaining and adjust. I just started making those adjustments again recently.

what was the plan out of columbo's "winning bodybuilding"??

As I said earlier. I’ve tried every eating plan you could imagine. The most successful for me was trying to gain slowly by eating pretty clean and adjusting portion sizes and calories a little at a time. If I was gaining size and keeping my body fat in check I would go up a little but if I noticed my waist getting to big I’d back it down a little. The program I found to be most successful came out of Franco Columbo’s book “Winning Bodybuilding” but as you will see below I made a few adjustments that worked better for me. I often worked in restaurants so getting the food that fit my plan was pretty easy.

Franco’s Program

Breakfast

3 eggs
1 fresh fruit
Small dish yogurt with granola
Glass water

Lunch

Large Fresh vegetable Salad with Oil and Vinegar
Cooked Vegetable
Large portion broiled protein, fish chicken, steak or lamb.
Water or wine

Mid Afternoon

Large plate of imported cheeses
Fresh Fruit

Dinner
Same as lunch

Evening
Yogurt

My Variation of this was as follows:

Breakfast

2 Bran Muffins
6-8 egg whites 3 yolks
Essential Amino Acids
Fruit
Water
coffee

Lunch

Large Fresh vegetable Salad with Oil and Vinegar
Cooked Vegetable
Large portion broiled protein, fish chicken, steak or lamb.
Water or wine

Mid Afternoon

16 ounces of cottage cheese and fruit OR Protein drink
2 Rice Cakes with Peanut Butter and Fruit Only Jelly

Dinner

Same as lunch but with a baked potato 3 of 7 days (every day made me get too heavy).

Evening

Yogurt OR protein drink
If I was out clubbing sometimes I’d go to Fat Burger and get a Double Kingburger.

and keep moving!

looks pretty solid!

thanks alot.

i like to see how the guys back in the day ate!

its crazy now how guys nowadays eat sooooo much more then that and wonder why in the 70/80's no one had distended stomachs but now they do eating 6 or 7000 calories in the offseason and they look pregnant onstage and their stomachs are bursting out of their skin offstage.
