lets face it. growing alot from one workout is impossible. but growing a little bit is very doable.

annihilating your muscles trying to work as hard as possible and do as much damage as you can is not going to result in growth. it WILL result in temporary pump and inflamation/acid build up for up to a couple days.

staying away from failure, and never injuring or exausting your muscle is key.

stimulate, dont annihilate.

but remember, big muscle=strong muscle. so focus on heavy weights and never go more than a workout or two without hitting the low rep ranges sufficiently.

Most people can take a set or two to complete failure. There is nothing wrong with going to failure, just as long as you remember once you tax that muscle 100%, leave it alone!

i understand what he is saying.. since i am older than most here i can tell ya hiiting it hard every single workout like i have done in the past led to burn out and numerous injuries even though my form was always slow and controlled.. the key is consistency .. it is truly hard to be consistent with injuries and a burnt out cns.. i am just now at the tender of age 40- something learning that the progression needs to be slow and steady.. to try and hit the homerun every workout is counter productive.. if not now, eventually..

building muscle its not a math science. I feel I get improvements using both methods, the key is to switch between them at the right time. Also, as somebody already said, consistency if the main thing, if you dont work out and eat great every day every week every month then training theories will be just garbage.

my workouts are many micro cycles of different exercise principles within one large macro cycle that is dictated by my ability to recover.

and I thought only economists used such terminology as macro/micro etc....

you if you hit your muscles to failure but you give enough rest time for them to fully recover then it will work greatly. My basic traning routine is to focus more on exaustion during the first 2-3 weeks and then when I feel my body has adapted to it I lower the reps and go for the failure.

The CNS is going to burn out regardless of slow & controlled or going heavier. I have tried you can't beat it. Just have to take the rest when it happens and then start up, nothing wrong with 1 to 1.5 weeks off to rest.

QFT.....when I was younger, if I even thought I was half assing it I upped it a notch.  Great form still got me a torn pec, torn tricep tendon, torn hamstring.....I didnt want to ever take a week off to rest.  If I wasnt puking from being sick I was not too sick to go to the gym.  I have actually tried not squatting as deep after reading an article about mechanics of the squat.  Funny enough, my knees didnt feel like they were on first yesterday after a morning leg workout.
