Yeah they look way too similar. I don't know cars by their chassy numbers but I liked the BMW 5 series 2 generations ago.

The last generation grew on me, but still didn't look that good especially from the back.
This new one ...it's a disguised sonata.

Japs and Koreans are always going to rip off the Germans.  Can't hold that against the germans.

$5k is just a ball park number. If you're patient and search for a car you can come across a good price and very well maintained one. You could spend more or less...very arbitrary number.

But around the 100,000 mile mark on ANY car...not just german you're going to have to start dropping decent loads of cash into the car so it runs fine.

Cheapest way to get into a moderately flashy car is a lexus or infiniti.

I love german cars. The words cheap and german do not go together.
Buddy of mine had a 2000 boxster. I remember he had some basic thing done to the engine and it was some astronomical number at the time for some normal engine work.

I hear ya.   Unfortunately, jap cars just arent as 'sexy'.  Ive gotten some good advice though, a bunch of really knowledgeable car guys here.

He hit me with a pm, thanks 'parker'  ;)

well in this instance, what if its not for me.
So you are saying that the maintenance cost of a lower level german car from 75k mi to 125k mi is approx 5 grand?
And then what is your suggestion for the cheapest way to get in and potentially out of a moderately flashy car?

Lease it. People say you shouldn't but it's worth it to me to never have the hassle of dealing with breakdowns.  I had the HPFP issue someone mentioned in this thread.  Had it replaced twice under warranty. Would bet that whoever got the car next had the same issue. Flip side is you're always making car payments.  Ask yourself if you would be happy driving a 2000 530?  In my opinion, the flash is long gone.  I don't care about the flash, but I like the latest and greatest in tech.

Yeah not into Jap cars either. I'm very biased and am a loyal fan of anything Mercedes.

A buddy of mine made a good point the other day. He grew up in a house where his father was a cadillac man. So he grew up to love caddies.

In my house and family, Mercedes was always pimped by everybody. Now, anything by Mercedes makes me shit myself. I love the GLKs and the ugly R class...afraid to admit.

My next benz will be something around 4 years old with 30-50k on it.

I agree completely. Leasing is great...check out swapalease.com  & similar sites. You can pick up somebody else's lease for no money down most of the time.

My gf bought a 2007 C230 in '09 and since then we put on new brakes, rotors, 4 tires, air filters, oil changes...etc. That's over $2,000 in maintenance.

If you divide that $2k by the number of payments and other costs that will accumulate over the length of ownership then the extra costs will be actually more than a monthly lease payment. The peace of mind of leasing is great.

Buying a car makes sense only if you plan on keeping it for atleast 4 years after you are done with the payments.

Sportars just get heavier and heavier every year, that suck big time! And then they need to sompensate with stronger engine every time....

Follow the motorbike trend, more power less weight, thats something to strive for...

almost 4000 pound, jesus...

Haha, sounds like a bunch of guys that really can't afford German cars!

These cars are not like japanese or even American cars, big money pit when old and out of warranty. Why go through the hassle. Either you can afford it or you can't. Stop trying to be a
Poser. Sorry, but that's what I see with these guys and their old European cars.
Why not just get a cheap VW??

Thought everyone on GB were millionaires and billionaires and drive
Italian exotics :D
