29 and gone. Why must all the good ones die? Why, God, why?
http://www.urbanprep.org/alee/Alfred Boyd Lee, Jr., Urban Prep's Director of Alumni Affairs drowned on April 17, 2011 while on vacation in Brazil when a large wave and strong current took him under the water. He was twenty-nine.
Alfred was hired as Urban Prep's Alumni Director because of his unique understanding, born out of personal experience, of the challenges facing African-American boys in college. Alfred had a strong passion for education and recently completed the requirements for a Master's degree in education. He was to participate in the Loyola University of Chicago graduation in May.
In addition to leading our efforts to support Urban Prep's alumni, Alfred was a dear friend to many people at Urban Prep, including our founder & CEO Tim King who mentored Alfred since he was in high school.
Alfred will be sorely missed and as the leader of one of our three programs, his death creates a real void at Urban Prep. Nonetheless, we will continue to provide the necessary support to our alumni as they finish their first year in college, as well as the current seniors as they prepare for college.
A scholarship fund has been created in Alfred's name. The Alfred Boyd Lee Jr. Scholarship will be awarded annually at Commencement to an Urban Prep graduate who best exemplifies those stellar attributes that made Alfred such a wonderful person. To contribute to the scholarship fund, please visit
www.urbanprep.org/donate and type "Alfred Lee Scholarship" in the comments section. Or, mail a check payable to Urban Prep Academies to 420 N Wabash, Suite 300, Chicago, IL 60611 with "Alfred Lee Scholarship" written in the memo section of the check. Cards and notes of condolences for Alfred's family can be sent to the same address.
Thank you for your support during this very difficult time. Alfred will be sorely missed.
