Put the grudge match on hold. Neil Davidson of the Canadian Press broke news on Twitter that Jon Jones has pulled out of his first title defense against former teammate Rashad Evans. John Morgan of MMA Junkie added that Jones "is facing a lengthy recovery from a torn right-hand ligament suffered in his title win."

Phil Davis will step in to fight Evans, which will do little to dispel the inability of some fans to differentiate between Jones and himself. There has been no official announcement, but MMA Junkie reports that the bout is expected to take place at UFC 133 in Philadelphia.

I'm curious as to why it took so long for this news to break. It's been over a month since Jones wrestled the light heavyweight title away from Mauricio Rua.

This is a huge blow for the UFC, who now has to face the possibility of their two marquee divisions stalled with serious injuries to Jones and heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez.

The biggest loser in all of this, of course, is Rashad Evans. Evans chose to sit out and wait for former champ Mauricio Rua as the latter recovered from a knee injury suffered in his UFC 113 title victory over Lyoto Machida. During training for the bout, Evans suffered a knee injury of his own, and the UFC replaced him with stablemate Jones.

Comments from Jones made to the media caused a rift at Jackson's Submission Fighting, ultimately leading to Evans leaving the camp following Jones' victory over Rua at UFC 128. Facing nearly 15 months of inaction, Evans can't afford to turn down another fight.

Phil Davis is undefeated in nine fights, and he last defeated Antonio Rogerio Nogueira by unanimous decision at the UFC Fight Night: Seattle.

it sucks that Jones is on the shelf but I don't have a problem with not seeing Evan/Jones...

Evans bores the shit out of me..

the only fight that could stink more than Jones/Evans would be Davis/Evans !

they better offer a damned good undercard for this crap !

Ru fucking kidding me?

This sucks balls.

Make Rashad fight Rampage or Shogun. There is nobody else at 205 that I would pay to watch him fight.

I think this is actually great news for Rashad in that he gets an easy (well, should be easy) tune up fight before going in with Jones.

What if Davis wins though?  I really don't think Davis deserves anything in the top 5, let alone Jones.

Here is Jone's explanation:

"(The torn tissue in my right hand in the area between my thumb and forefinger) is an injury that’s been recurring since I was a college wrestler, it doesn’t affect my punching or grappling, but I am taking the time and the proper measures to correct this now, so that it doesn’t happen again. I look forward to getting back to training and to my first title defense. As for Rashad, let’s see what happens with Phil Davis. I will be watching that fight with great interest."

It is dick of him to address this now.  He is either afraid of Rashad, or just plain wanted to fuck him out of the title shot he's been waiting for for over a year.

This is kind of shady that he's choosing to do this now.

Jones really has nothing to lose by sitting out and getting the injury fixed and I guess I can't say I blame him.  Plus if there really is a "grudge" with Rashad, what better way to let him know who's in control than to deny him a title fight.

Sucks for the fans though.

Disappointed Rashad and Bones aren't throwing hands, but Rashad vs. Phil Davis should be interesting. I predicted Phil will win this fight and shake up the LHW division.
