IMF Head Charged Over Alleged Sex Attack..
« on: May 15, 2011, 08:06:31 AM »

These bankers think they are above the law.

The head of the IMF has been charged with a criminal sexual act, attempted rape and unlawful imprisonment, following allegations made by a hotel maid in New York.
Dominique Strauss-Kahn was taken into custody at JFK airport after being pulled from the first-class cabin of a flight to Paris just minutes before take-off.
The 62-year-old married father of four is due to appear before a judge later today.
The lawyer representing Mr Strauss-Kahn, Benjamin Brafman, has indicated he “will plead not guilty” to the charges.
The incident is alleged to have happened in Mr Strauss-Kahn’s luxury suite at the Sofitel hotel, not far from Manhattan’s Times Square. A 32-year-old maid told authorities she was attacked when she went into clean the room.

A JP Morgan guy is now in charge of the IMF...When will it end.
Greek Bailout Money Is In Jeopardy As The IMF's Departing John Lipsky, Former JPM Chief Economist, Is In Temporary Command
Submitted by Tyler Durden on 05/15/2011 10:38 -0400

Dominique Strauss-Kahn European Union Greece International Monetary Fund New York City

It turns out that the meeting that DSK was rushing to (in just a bit of a rush, without his cell phone), was a critical one for the future of Greece. Per the AP: "The arrest of IMF chief Dominique Strauss-Kahn means a key participant will be missing at a European meeting considering whether to give Greece billions more in financial help." Does this mean that all Greek bailout talk is put on hold? As a result the headless (no pun intended) IMF is forced to promote its second in command, John Lipsky, previously chief economist of JP Morgan, to the rank of acting managing director, even as "separately, spokeswoman Caroline Atkinson said the fund remains fully functioning and operational despite the arrest of the fund's chief executive." What is funny is that it was just yesterday that Lipsky announced he was stepping down in August. What happens to the world's pseudo-bailout organization come September, when its top two officers are gone, is anyone's guess.

From AP:

Strauss-Kahn was to hold talks Sunday with German Chancellor Angela Merkel and join European finance ministers on Monday in Brussels. That won't be happening since he was arrested in New York City this weekend on suspicion of sexual assault on a hotel maid.

Ministers from the 17 countries that use the common euro currency are talking about whether they have to give Greece more help in paying its debts. Greece already received a euro110 billion ($157 billion) bailout package from the European Union and the IMF last year.

The International Monetary Fund says it "remains fully functional" despite the arrest.
And from Dow Jones:

John Lipsky is currently acting managing director of the International Monetary Fund, as the current head, Dominique Strauss-Kahn, is in police custody in New York following his arrest on attempted rape charges, a fund official said Sunday.

Separately, spokeswoman Caroline Atkinson said the fund remains fully functioning and operational despite the arrest of the fund's chief executive.

Lipsky, technically the first deputy managing director, was effectively put in the role when the fund chief went to New York on private business, the first official said.

The fund said early Sunday morning by email that Strauss-Kahn had retained his own private lawyer to deal with the case.

"The IMF has no comment on the case; all inquiries will be referred to his personal lawyer and to the local authorities," spokeswoman Caroline Atkinson said.

They caught him just in time:

By the time police established that the occupant of the room was Mr Strauss-Kahn, the IMF chief was on board an Air France plane at John F Kennedy airport, about to depart for Paris.

"Our detectives requested of the airport authorities that they stop the plane from leaving, went to the airport and took him into custody," Mr Browne said.

"If our officers had been 10 minutes later he would have been in the air and on their way to France."

And it seems like he's not new to this whole thing:

But in 2008 he was investigated by the IMF board over his relationship with a female member of his staff.

The board ruled his actions "reflected a serious error of judgment" but that the relationship had been consensual. He apologised to IMF staff and his wife, French TV personality Anne Sinclair.

May 16 (Bloomberg) -- International Monetary Fund chief Dominique Strauss-Kahn, accused of sexually assaulting and attempting to rape a hotel housekeeper, is spending the night in New York's Rikers Island jail complex, a prison official said.

Strauss-Kahn, 62, will be held in protective custody in a single-person cell and kept away from other inmates when he's out of his cell, Stephen Morello, a spokesman for the New York City Department of Correction, said today in a telephone interview.

"He will be on Rikers Island by this evening," Morello said.

A judge today ordered Strauss-Kahn held without bail, two days after he was pulled off an Air France flight as it prepared to leave John F. Kennedy International Airport. Strauss-Kahn faces as long as 25 years in prison if convicted of the most serious charges, said prosecutors, who told the judge he presented a flight risk.

A potential candidate for the French presidency, Strauss- Kahn has denied the charges and will plead not guilty, his lawyer Benjamin Brafman has said. He didn't enter a plea today. His next court appearance was set for May 20.

'No Incentive'

"He has almost no incentive to stay in this country," Assistant District Attorney Artie McConnell told the judge at a packed bail hearing in lower Manhattan. "He has an extensive network of contacts throughout the world."

The IMF chief is charged with criminal sexual acts, attempted rape, sexual abuse, unlawful imprisonment, sexual abuse and forcible touching, according to court papers.

Brafman asked the judge to let his client stay with his daughter, who lives in New York, while awaiting trial. The lawyer said Strauss-Kahn's wife, television journalist Anne Sinclair, was flying to New York today.

Brafman said the Air France flight had been booked in advance and Strauss-Kahn was on his way to see German Chancellor Angela Merkel. After the hearing, Brafman told the reporters at the courthouse that he would review the bail decision.

The case is People v. Strauss-Kahn, 1225782, Criminal Court of the City of New York (New York County).

Sounds like another false rape allegation.   :-\

Details emerge of woman's jailhouse call as media pursue Strauss-Kahn

By the CNN Wire Staff
July 2, 2011

New York (CNN) -- One day after a stunning court revelation about an accuser's lack of honesty in the Dominique Strauss-Kahn sexual assault case, media across New York descended on the freed financier with a renewed sense of vigor.

On Saturday, the former head of the International Monetary Fund was pursued by photographers and news teams across Manhattan. After emerging from his posh Tribecca townhouse, Strauss-Kahn and his security detail blazed through downtown city streets in a black Mercedes sedan, darting in and out of roadways in an attempt to outrun camera crews in pursuit.

Ten vehicles from an array of different news teams gave chase, including at least three photographers perched atop motorcycles, according to CNN producer Raelyn Johnson.

Interest surrounding the scandal reached a fever-pitch Friday when a New York judge released Strauss-Kahn from house arrest after prosecutors presented evidence questioning the credibility of his accuser.

Also, less than two days after the alleged victim said the attack occurred, she spoke over the phone with a boyfriend in an Arizona jail in a recorded conversation.

A source with knowledge of the investigation told CNN that she said that "she's fine and this person is rich and there's money to be made," as originally reported by The New York Times.

The source also said the alleged victim had bank accounts in multiple states.

"She was getting deposits of several thousands of dollars at a time from people she knew, potentially involved in drug dealing," the source told CNN.

The 32-year-old immigrant admitted to prosecutors that she lied about the specifics of her whereabouts following the alleged attack, the details of an asylum application and information she put on tax forms, according to documents filed in court Friday by prosecutors.

Meanwhile, in her native Guinea, residents in the nation's capital expressed their support for the alleged victim, despite her tainted testimony.

"Really, you should have sympathy on her," said Mabity Boungoura in the Guinean capital of Conakry. "When you do something bad to a woman, you need to recognize and accept it."

While the case has taken a dramatic turn, it has not been dismissed, Manhattan District Attorney Cy Vance said Friday.

The indictment and charges -- including criminal sexual acts and sexual abuse -- against Strauss-Kahn, 62, still stand, he said.

Strauss-Kahn's lawyers said the alleged victim told "substantial lies about her own background and the facts of this case."

The development is particularly stunning given prior statements by New York authorities, who spoke forcefully about the accuser's credibility. It appears to leaves the felony case against Strauss-Kahn seriously undermined, despite DNA evidence of sexual contact recovered from the hotel suite.

The judge said authorities will continue to withhold the French financier's passport, but that he is free to travel in the United States.

Prosecutors said Friday that the woman admitted to lying in her application for asylum in the United States, claiming she had been a victim of a gang rape. She cried when she first told prosecutors about the rape, but in a subsequent interview admitted it never occurred.

In angry remarks delivered outside the courthouse, the woman's attorney, Kenneth Thompson, admitted problems with his client's credibility, but the bottom line, he said, is that she was attacked.

"That was true the day it happened and it is true today," he said, describing in chilling detail the account the woman gave of her attack and the bruising on her body.

"She has described that sexual assault many times to the prosecutors and to me. And she has never once changed a single thing about that account."

Source: Manhattan District Attorney Set to Drop Charges Against Strauss-Kahn
Published July 05, 2011
New York Post

New York –  Prosecutors will agree to drop the charges against former International Monetary Fund chief Dominique Strauss-Kahn -- either on his next court date in two weeks or even sooner, the New York Post reported Tuesday citing a top investigator in the sexual assault case who called the eventual dismissal "a certainty."

"We all know this case is not sustainable," the source told The Post.

"Her credibility is so bad now, we know we cannot sustain a case with her," the source said, referring to the Guinean hotel maid who accused Strauss-Kahn of trying to rape her in his plush Manhattan hotel suite -- shocking charges that got the international banker bounced as head of the IMF and also derailed, at least for now, his bid to become president of France.

"She is not to be believed in anything that comes out of her mouth -- which is a shame, because now we may never know what happened in that hotel room," said the source, who is at the center of the investigation and would speak only on the condition of anonymity. "Did [Strauss-Kahn] use force? Was there actually a crime? I don't think we'll ever know."

Judge Dismisses Sex Assault Charges Against Strauss-Kahn
Published August 23, 2011 | FoxNews.com

The sex assault case against Dominique Strauss-Kahn took yet another legal turn on Tuesday, when a New York judge dismissed the charges -- but put the order on hold pending an appeal.

State Supreme Court Justice Michael Obus said he wouldn't dismiss the case until an appeal is decided on whether a special prosecutor should be appointed. That appeal was expected to be decided later Tuesday.

The former head of the International Monetary Fund appeared resolute in the courtroom, wearing a dark gray suit, blue shirt and a navy-and-gold striped tie, smiling and shaking hands with an audience member and his wife, journalist Anne Sinclair, sitting nearby. They left court without speaking to reporters but read a statement shortly afterward.

"These past two and a half months have been a nightmare for me and my family," he said. "I want to thank all the friends in France and in the United States who have believed in my innocence, and to the thousands of people who sent us their support personally and in writing. I am most deeply grateful to my wife and family who have gone through this ordeal with me. ...

"We will have nothing further to say about this matter and we look forward to returning to our home and resuming something of a more normal life," he said.

He reiterated a statement in French outside the posh townhouse where he was held under house arrest for much of the summer.

Obus said he saw no reason not to dismiss the case. But noting that the accuser was still seeking to get a special prosecutor appointed, Obus said, "I am going to stay the effectiveness of the order I am about to enter."

Shortly before the hearing Obus had denied the request to appoint a special prosecutor, saying there was nothing that would disqualify Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus R. Vance from heading the case.

At the hearing, Assistant District Attorney Joan Illuzzi-Orbon formally recommended the case be dismissed.

"Our inability to believe the complainant beyond a reasonable doubt means, in good faith, that we could not ask a jury to do that," she said.

Manhattan prosecutors had filed court papers a day earlier saying they did not feel comfortable going forward with the case, because they had deep concerns about the credibility of the maid, Nafissatou Diallo.

She "has not been truthful on matters great and small" and has an ability to present "fiction as fact with complete conviction," and medical and DNA evidence is "simply inconclusive" as proof of a forced sexual encounter, they wrote.

"Our grave concerns about (her) reliability make it impossible to resolve the question of what exactly happened" between the hotel maid and the former International Monetary Fund leader, they wrote.

The case captured international attention as a seeming cauldron of sex, violence, power and politics: A promising French presidential contender, known in his homeland as the Great Seducer, accused of a brutal and contemptuous attack on a West African immigrant who had come to clean his plush suite.
