In this day and age it doesn't matter how good you are at guitar or how musically gifted you are.  all that matters is looks and being able to suck dick at the studio.  just take a over-used chord progression write a poem to go with it and hope they will try to market you.

generation nothingness doesn't care for any form of intelligence, that's why they hate "Friday" by rebecca black but love "Baby" by Justin Beaver  even though it's the same chord progression behind both songs.  they don't hear or understand the music they just see the face on the music video and like whoever their friends say to like.

all the skill in the world means nothing now, that's why the worlds greatest musicians usually wind up giving lessons or playing at the local bar.  some movie composers are really good but in general the music industry is all downhill

So is anyone in this thread not into the depressing slow old blues shit or gypsy jazz (who the fuck even listens to this crap!?)  :)

Who listens to this crap?  Lets see now, where do i start:   Tony Iommi, Joe Bonamassa, Jimmmy Page, Jeff Beck, Clapton, Chet Atkins (RIP), Derek Trucks, SRV, Knoppfler, BB King, Perter Frampton, Santana, T Emmanual, Steve Howe, George Benson, Jerry Garcia, Satriani,  Malmsteen (I can go on & on...) & just about every "shredder"/heavy metal guitarist known to man, including Michael Angelo Batio ( Voted No. 1 Shredder of All Time" by Guitar One Magazine).

If you were a guitar purist, you actually knew a bit of history about the instrument you seem to love so much, or had half a clue, youd know that.

All thanks to a gentleman by the name of Django Reinhardt (the father of Gypsy Jazz), who started it all way back in the 1930s, and influenced some of the greatest guitarists of all time. Oh, and he only had 2 working left fingers, and could keep up with any modern "shredder" guitarist could do with four. He was tearing up the axe (with 2 fingers) when Michael Romeo was swinging in his grand daddys nuts.

So next time you are jamming out your hero Yngwie (who incidentally named Django “the best guitarists who ever lived”), guess what dipshit – you can attribute much of that to Gypsy Jazz.

Damn straight. He had his hand mangled in a fire so he could only use 2 fingers on his fret hand.

Not quite the same, but I had my forearm sliced to the bone in an industrial accident and have no feeling in my picking hand. They attempted to reattach the nerves but all that did was send fucked up signals to my brain. Touch my palm and it feels as if I'm being touched half way up my arm. Funny when I can't tell where the pick is, only to find it's sitting on the ground, again. :P

I doubt that I would say "keep up" with the shredders. They would be fortunate to have "kept up" with him, and his insane scaling techniques that force the rest of us to actually work.

He always appeared relaxed.

BTW, I mentioned him (and Joe Pass) earlier on. These guys that play rythym or bass over the melody are somethin else.

Don't forget to click "skip ad"

What I like about this guy is something I don't have: "originality"

Pure originality and a "direct connection" with his guitar...

I forgot this one. Two opposing songs played at the same time. Anyone remember "outlaw Josie Wales?"

Very original, this guy. I'll stop before someone claims I like him TOO much. Watching him and Chet Atkins play would make any aspiring guitarist jizz his drawers.

Though there are stories about Django where he was able to use the two fingers that were burned together (his ring and pinky) as one and occasionally fret here or there. Still, with or without the use of the vestibule, he was a monster long before the majority of guys mentioned at any given time during these conversations.

For shredders, I think the guy I like most is Paul Gilbert. "Gilberto Concerto" is a great tune that was written by JC Bach and he redid it using the aforementioned name, and instead of Harpsichords, he used multiple guitars.

Playing relaxed and with proper breathing is one the keys to playing with great technique. Good vids. Everyone I come across is a fan of Andy McKee these days.

Can't talk about guitars without these two gents...sans Al from that other famous night.

Both direct influences on my playing.

Not too shabby for a pseudo-flamenco style.

Paul was another major influence on my picking style.

Just looked up the Concerto, and found it on YouTube:

An interesting take on the song, which though the guys tone is horrendously rancid, I like what he did for the video:

And the original, where all the shredders copped their shit from:

Shit, now I'm off playing DJ as I often like to do...whether others care for it or not!

This guy is insane, all finger picking too. I can't find a copy of the song where he is playing insanely fast, clean and articulated. You can catch glimpses of it here, but I posted this for the titties!

And because I love the Latin theme right now...

Concerto is great! I remember learning keyboard licks from Paul's column in GW in the late 80's or early 90's. Lamb lies down on Broadway I believe it was. A lot of string skipping and tapping is/was based on keyboard based licks/compositions.

Yeah, we all stole from the classical composers...haha.

Music is subjective......there is no "best" (while we can certainly identify "technical ability and proficiency/as well as those who "butcher" music/songs...it's about how it makes you feel/what emotion it pulls outta you....music can be like a drug (alter your mood), just an hour ago a song came on and i felt the need to roll down the windows/turn it up and drive faster lol!
they also take you back to times and places (for me girls/X's) .....also bad/sad times in your life(i played guitar for awhile back in the 80's......took lessons, first song i learned was "Metallica/Welcome Home Sanitarium" i wasn't very good at all/lol...but i loved being onstage/go figure right

Music is definitely subjective. Wish more guitar players would realize that..haha!

To show you don't have to have speed or exquisite technique (though the guy has all of that and more!)...the beauty of a simple melody and where it can take your mind:

And this guy is my HERO, on so so so many levels:

This = smart

I never took any of my more expensive guitars to gigs (PRS, Gibson, high end Jackson's, ESP's) screw that, if some dildo gets up on stage to body surf or whatever and knocks into my guitar and breaks off a headstock.

Wouldn't mind checking out your playing sometime... any chance of that happening? Vids? Tracks?

I know that you know your shit and you aren't fucking around. That's obvious by your name (just kidding)- obvious by your posts in the music threads.

Let's go!!!!!!! I promise you right now I will downright annihilate anybody on this board, 32nd note 6 string arpeggios from 1st to 24th fret , tap sweeps and ridiculous legato!

I used to play Yngwie and Symphony X for fun!

But does any of it sound any good? Do you make shitloads of mistakes?
