Report: Record number of laws restricting abortion passed
« on: July 13, 2011, 01:59:39 PM »
July 13, 2011

Nineteen states passed a record-breaking 80 laws restricting abortion access in the first half of this year, according to a report  from the pro-abortion rights think tank the Guttmacher Institute.

The previous record was 34 laws restricting abortion in 2005.

Five states mandated that women wait a certain amount of time or seek counseling before they can have access to an abortion. South Dakota's law went the farthest, mandating a 72-hour waiting period and counseling from a pregnancy crisis center, which are sometimes religiously affiliated. (The law was blocked in federal court pending the outcome of Planned Parenthood's legal challenge. Voters have overturned proposed bans on abortion in the state twice.)

Another five states adopted laws that ban abortions after 20 weeks of gestation. And in Montana, Texas, and New Hampshire, funding for Planned Parenthood (which provides abortions as well as contraception and women's health services) was eliminated or cut by more than half. Planned Parenthood has won legal victories against bills in South Dakota, Kansas, and Indiana so far, the National Journal reports.

You don't say?  You mean the country hasn't put this issue to bed?  Didn't I have discussion on the board about a year or so ago about this?   :)
