Flashback: Gaddafi Praises Obama As a “Friend”

(April 17th, 2010) — Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi considers the US president a blessing to the Muslim world. In a speech published in London-based al-Hayat newspaper on Saturday, Gaddafi praised Barack Obama, called him a “friend” and said there is no longer any dispute between his country and the US.

Speaking in the Libyan city of Sirt at an event marking the 24th anniversary of an American attack on Libya, he said, “At the time, we were the target of the American cannon, the American navy challenged us in the gulf of Sirt and attacked us all along Libya’s shores. America tested Libya, and the Libyan people resisted the large country, but today, thank God, the difference is great.”

He said, “Now, ruling America is a black man from our continent, an African from Arab descent, from Muslim descent, and this is something we never imagined – that from Reagan we would get to Barakeh Obama.”

Gaddafi stressed that Obama’s presidency is “a major historical gain” and said, “He is someone I consider a friend. He knows he is a son of Africa. Regardless of his African belonging, he is of Arab Sudanese descent, or of Muslim descent. He is a man whose policy should be supported, and he should be assisted in implementing it in any way possible, since he is now leaning towards peace.”

He continued, “I urge all peoples to give him this chance and to support this policy, because America is a country that, when its policy is bad – harms the world, and when it is good – it helps the world.”

The Libyan leader also expressed hopes that, “the dream that Obama has for a world free of nuclear weapons will come true. This is something that no previous American president has proposed. Obama is a man who opposes wars that previous American presidents were entangled in; he has declared that he will withdraw from Afghanistan and Iraq – something which has never been proposed before.”

Gaddafi learned the hard way. There isn't anyone Obama won't throw under the bus (see: England).

Funny.  With friends like these . . . .

Funny.  With friends like these . . . .

did obama agree they were friends?   kadaffi also called him son, right?

you assign credibility to a murderous dictator who killed americans.

i dont konw why you do that.

if obama had said they were great friends, i'd agree is was pretty fcked up to dog him.

but just because a dictator said it, it makes it so?

I remember when US denied, but kadaffi accused Reagan of arming bin laden.  Wait, bad example...

Unfortunately, it wasn't me who was accusing others of lacking critical thought, that was you.  Therefore the burden of proof is on your shoulders.

I have read many posts in this thread providing some in depth thought on what the possible outcomes of this regime change will bring, and the impacts it could have on EU, and then the United States.

While I, of course, think that getting rid of an evil dictator is a good start, the fallout is what is most pressing.   HH6 provided examples of Egypt that shows the negative ramifications that can develop.  Do you think this is an issue?

Also, assuming the same intelligence and decisions that were made, do you believe that the prior regime would have been unable to have Khadaffi ousted and capture?

The ramifications could be bad....but it could be good as well...it gives Libya a chance at having a democracy and it gives the U.S. and its allies the chance to have an ally in Libya.....again...the U.S. cannot guarantee any outcome..we can try to shape things as best we can so that we can have a more favorable outcome...but its all up to the Libyans...as well as with the Egyptians...we did our part...its up to them now....Democracy is messy....there is going to be infighting and other troubles....but again..its up to them to shape their country..if they fuck it up..its their problem..you can't blame Obama for that.....if Iraq does not become a functioning democracy and slips back into dictatorship, is that Bush's fault???..NO.//its the Iraqis fault....they professed that they wanted to get rid of Saddham and have a free democracy..we gave them the chance.....its all up to them

whats your opinion

At least people in Lybia know how to use a camera and aren't afraid of offending anyone with the photos they take..

The only reason this happened was because of a United States Predator Drone which led the French NATO Strike.

Keep that in mind as Poop Paul would have none of that.

I think any time Islamic Law is to a big part of the legislation of a governing body, the chance for radicals to get power is real and dangerous.   I'm not banking on getting a democratic ally over this.  Yes, Khaddafi did not deserve to continue to rule, but it's all about what happens next, if we're going to go the giving credit route.
