Tell them switch from "distorted" to clean, you'll see who has the superior technique

steve vai is probably the best all round guitarist in the world.

er....... maybe technically. Not the best at tear jerking feeling or anything, but that's personal I guess and it's not a contest.

All the super-strat guys, Gilbert, Ia Ekland from Freak Kitchen etc all have that monotone humbucker Ibanez Caparison, Jackson sound with no dynamics. Give them a proper strat or tele and I'm sure they're still good, but Buddy Guy, Stevie Ray, even John Mayer, can do expressive shit that I personally get more from than all the scale speed guys. I love Michael Angelo et all and enjoy playing arpeggios and sweeps and speed picking, but at the end of the day the mature listener, and girls, wanna hear notes with feeling that evoke a mood other than slaying dragons at a million miles an hour.

Then there's Paco De Lucia, Al Dimeola etc. And Spanky Alford, Bud Powell, Jo Pass, .........Django, so many good guys from all eras. Vai couldn't play what  Spanky Alford plays cos he wouldn't know the notes probably.

I'm seeing Tommy Emmanuelle next week, those who know will know the awesomeness!

What vid were you watching?! Awesome on tele too. If you're not into Danny Gatton / Albert Lee type stuff I guess it's not your thing, but still has more integrity than hiding behind a bunch of gain where you hardly have to touch the strings.

Zakk Wylde, can shred & yet still makes some of the notes sing for their supper. He also has the widest singing, vibrato, in the rock guitar world  :o

Damn that guy is good!! Makes me want to practice every time I hear him play.............

Zakk, is using a tone of gain there, but he is also hitting a shit load of notes.

Just so this thread can stay in G&O - I though I would add this.

I have no idea who this guy is, but it's BB'ing related, so it stays in the G&O  ;)

Or you can go down the, "my name is Michael Angelo Batio, & I have got more shred than can be contained on one guitar neck" - "So I got x2. Yeah I have a hair cut that looks like I just came of the set of the Munsters, & I look a total fucking dick, with this dumb, double neck guitar, but hey, fuck it"

What was he thinking?? Watch for the cheesy little look he gives the camera every now & then, that says "check me out" - What a fucking idiot.

The funny thing that I can never figure out:   he always wears Golds Gym tank tops.   LOL, even at the NAMM show, he's wandering around wearing that tank..         Well, at least he keeps it bodybuilding related!!!!   :D :D :D

He's also got the best wigs around.

How about a little Eddie. Apparently his face froze from too much botox.

Dweezil, is Dweezil, & Eddie is Eddie.

I have never seen a youtube vid of some bedroom guitar hero that gets as close as that.
Dweezil, nails it. & the Eddie story before the shred is pretty fucking funny also  ;D

PT

I have to agree, Dweezil pretty much plays that as close as it can get unless you're watching Eddie himself in the recording studio at the moment it was recorded.

Someone with ears, not even Eddy, gets as close as that when he plays it live, FFS  ;)

Okay he's not playing a super strat, and he has tons of ability, but shitloads of gains and shitloads of notes does not necessarily the best guitarist ever make. Plus he has that scooped annoying sound. Badass for rock/metal though.

John Petrucci has like zero feel, just that "look at me I'm doing a soft bit and making no mistakes" type of feel, which is fair enough but leaves me cold.

Give him or Zak Wylde some single coils and ask him to evoke some proper emotion, he can't do it. Dream Theatre are arguably the least musical band on earth, crazy complex solos and time changes played flawlessly into pro-tools where they can be made even more flawless, is not musical.

I'm not a big acoustic freak or anything, but this shit takes so much more care and makes your chest go all weird in an awesome way. Petrucci could probably play this flawlessly, but it wouldn't hit the spot in the same way. Subtlety and nuance are not his friend.

This guy is supporting Tommy Emmanuelle next week, he did work experience in the same music shop as me, about 18 here, check some of the runs towards the end, absolutely disgusting. He was spotted by Emmanuelle and is now his protegey.
I think he's on the same Candyrat records as Andy McKee also now.

Haha I actually like Michael Angelo, he's almost like a mental patient withhis obsession with the technical and disinterest in the modern world and other styles. You're right what is that fucking hair and facial expression? hahaha

There is no "best" guitar player.

If there were, there wouldn't be so many. Think a bit if possible.

There are guitarists that are aliens, just like bodybuilders. They will always have an upper edge on the "competition" ~ but the "best" is going to be in the eyes and ears of the beholder.

There is no "Best" anything in this world. Geez. How retarded.

Truth, Zakk has some of the best combo of emotion/bluesy and shredding/speed of any guitar player Ive heard.
He bridges the gap.

Honestly, Ive heard Vai try and play bluesy stuff, its just impossible, even his bluesy/emotional music feel and sound mechanical. Seems like all those shredders, they get into that mechanical fast as you can play mode, and they just cant ever loosen up. Every one ive heard, even when they try and slow down, and put emotion in, still sounds mechanical.

Worst was Yngwie, he had a song I listened to that was supposed to be a straight up blues piece, and it sounded like he inputed the notes into a computer and the computer was playing the music back to him. Lol.
