This is spot on.  we tip here in the UK only if the service is above what they get paid for. a waitress gets paid the same as a cashier and you wouldn't tip them for packing your bags. a certain level of service is expected any less and you call a manager any more they go home with more money.

Wages in the UK may be more equitable then they are in the States for waitpersons. A checker at the grocery store here makes better wages than most of the folks working in restaurants. Actually, many folks tip the bagger. This is certainly true at a PX in Europe.

Nice, I hear a lot of good things about Biscuits just haven't tried them yet. I don't go to West Linn much but I'm pretty close in Gresham. I have taken a few friends to Jakes, probably the most expensive meal I ever bought. And Sharis wouldn't say I love them but since it's 24hrs I tend to go there a lot. Speaking of 24 hr you need to try the Original Pancake house it's roughly on SE 12th and Powell. But speaking of tips I tip ok but make it a point to really take care of waite staff that I know from being a regular. Also my number 1 determination of the tip will be if my glass is kept full. I don't care if they are rude or if the food is shitty as long as I always have something to drink.

My wife and I have been to the Original Hotcake House on Powell. It's a fun place. The Original Pancake House is on S.W. Barbur Blvd. It has been there since 1953. They've never expanded at this location despite the fact that they are busy every day. The wait for a table is usually about an hour. Their German pancakes are excellent....as is pretty much everything there.

Like my dad once said, if the food is good, the customers will flock to the restaurant regardless of where it is (and apparently, no matter how long the wait is for a table).

I am not too familiar with restaurants in Gresham. I rarely get out that way. Last night, I was at a meeting at Papa's Pizza on 169th and Stark. The management gave us four extra free pizzas. Too bad I am not a huge fan of pizza.

I did suck as a waiter....met some really great women though.  Best table I ever waited on was a black guy with this really great looking woman.  I brought out their food and I didn't get five from from the table when he asked me if I could wrap it up for him.  I looked down and saw that his woman had her bare foot in his crotch.  I looked at her and she just licked her lips and winked.  I wrapped that order right on up and got them out of there....they left me $20 on a $50 tab...

I was a waiter in Myrtle Beach for 3 months while I was a student (7 years ago). I gave EVERYONE the same crack of the whip no matter what race they were. Black, white, hispanic, whatever - I was nice to them ALL. I went to America not really racist but I left quite racist after how badly blacks acted and had such a bad chip on their shoulder and rarely tipped. Their attitude was sickening to me. It left me with a bad taste in my mouth that is still strong. I fucking HATED seeing them after a month or two and generally avoided black tables.


a few examples

The only cool black table were a group of guys my age, about 4 of them. They actually tipped me the standard. 5 minutes after they left the hostess was looking for her phone, it was stolen. They were the first table in and out that afternoon (it was definitely them, lol)

2 black guys in their 30's came in and acted like twats. My gf told me after one of them asked her "had she ever had any black cos he had never had any white ass" and she never told me 'till they were gone because she knew shit would have went down bad (I was OFF THE HOOK crazy back then).
I was keeping an eye on them while she served them and they tried to leave without paying but I stopped 'em.
Also...
If a table of 4-5 came in, they would get buffet and sit down for maybe 2 hours and eat plate and plate of crab legs and steak and then just leave a 5 dollar tip between them and walk out like they owned the joint. Jesus, that used to make me rage because they'd complain about the food but eat it anyway and expect discount lol

I live in a part of the country where only 1% of the population is black. Realistically, I don't experience these issues as would someone where the black population is of a higher percentage.

Perhaps it is needless to say, but those African Americans who live in the same suburb as I do are likely not thugs or ghetto trash as we have no low income housing in West Linn, OR. However, nothing lasts forever. No doubt someday, West Linn will be part of the inner city of Portland, OR. However, even today the percentage of minorities in Portland is much lower than in other cities.

My daughter, son-in-law and grandson presently live in El Paso, TX. Whites are a minority in El Paso. Hispanics are the majority population.
