Ignore the spin: Wisconsin was a disaster for Democrats and President Obama
 Daily Caller ^ | 06/05/2012 | Thomas Grier

Posted on Tuesday, June 05, 2012 11:51:51

If you pause and listen carefully, you might be able to hear the despair coming from Jim Messina, President Obama’s 2012 campaign manager, and David Axelrod, Obama’s top strategist and communications director, as the meaning of Wisconsin’s recall election becomes clear.

In the final hours before Governor Scott Walker’s victory, with the writing on the wall, President Obama and his campaign could only muster a tweet and a last-minute video for challenger Tom Barrett. But do not let that tepid support fool you: Democrats and their union allies spent an astronomical amount on a judicial election, four state legislative recalls and the recall of Governor Walker, only to lose.

The spin has already begun. On Tuesday, White House Press Secretary Jay Carney said the Wisconsin recall election “probably won’t tell us much about a future race.” Regardless of what you hear, the results are a colossal failure for Democrats and President Obama’s re-election efforts. Even former Pennsylvania governor and Democratic National Committee chairman Ed Rendell, speaking on MSNBC last week, said the recall election was a “mistake.”

Democrats, Big Labor and Team Obama initially put all their chips on the table, organizing a massive get-out-the-vote effort to unseat Walker. The day before the recall, Wisconsin’s MacIver Institute illustrated just how much money Big Labor has spent: more than $21 million. Earlier in the month, the MacIver Institute put up a matrix to “put an end to any stories that Big Labor, the Democratic Party and other left-wing organizations aren’t going all out to recall Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker.” The spin aside, Team Obama, Big Labor and Democrats were heavily invested and suffered a huge loss in Wisconsin.

The recall sums up a season of abject failure for Democrats in Wisconsin. Since taking office in January 2011, Governor Walker has pushed for audacious spending cuts, comprehensive improvements to public-employee union benefits and the most agitating reform to the union monolith: lasting changes to Wisconsin’s collective bargaining laws.

Democratic legislators responded by childishly fleeing the state in order to prevent a quorum in the State Senate, while the Republican majority assured passage of Walker’s budget. After weeks of wringing their hands over their absent colleagues, the Republicans found a way to pass Walker’s budget.

In response, the left tried to invalidate Walker’s reforms by attempting to alter the composition of the Wisconsin Supreme Court. Liberals organized a “record setting” challenge to incumbent Wisconsin Supreme Court Justice David Prosser. Prosser’s challenger, ultra-progressive JoAnne Kloppenburg, was the left’s answer to all their union reform problems. The total cost of the race between Prosser and Kloppenburg topped $3 million. In the end, Prosser won re-election and Walker’s reforms were upheld.

The Democrats’ war on Governor Walker and Wisconsin Republicans continued, with groups organizing the recall of four state senators in an attempt to recapture the Wisconsin Senate and block Walker’s reforms. In their attempt to take back the Wisconsin Senate, Democrats and their backers spent $23.4 million, with outside groups spending $18.6 million against Republicans. But the attempt failed and Republicans triumphed.

Now, Democrats have lost yet another high-profile Wisconsin race. With this string of events taking place in a state that has not voted for a Republican presidential candidate since 1984 and is considered the birthplace of modern progressivism, Republicans must be starting to like their chances in November. Once considered an unassailable Democratic stronghold, Wisconsin is moving into the almost unthinkable swing-state territory.

As if the wind was not blowing hard enough against Democrats and Team Obama, Governor Walker’s reforms have been a resounding success. Walker cut a $3.6 billion deficit without raising taxes or curtailing state services, and he is expected to create a $150 million budget surplus by the end of the year.

While Barack Obama won Wisconsin by 14 points in 2008, it’s important to remember that George W. Bush came close to winning the state in 2000 and 2004, missing by 0.22 and 0.4 percent respectively. The efforts by Democrats this season have forced Republicans to build a grassroots machine. Their actions have proven to be very successful, pushing the estimated voter turnout to a whopping 60 to 65 percent of all adults. This machine will no doubt be in full operation in November, causing Axelrod’s and Messina’s hearts to flutter.

President Obama and Democrats are in trouble and no amount of Washington spin will change the facts in Wisconsin. Unions had their way for decades, but times change. And this time, it is not just the future of organized labor that is in peril, it is the political future of one of their biggest supporters: President Obama.

Developing story:

Protestors have just stormed the Capitol chanting.  School children have scattered.

Edit:  Apparently nothing out of the ordinary.

The worst night on cable news

By DYLAN BYERS |
6/5/12 10:47 PM EDT

If ever there was a political event to lay bare the partisan ideologies of the cable news media, the Wisconsin recall was it.

MSNBC was blatantly rooting for Tom Barrett to defeat Gov. Scott Walker, even sending union champion Ed Schultz to cover an event with no apologies for the dog he has in the fight. (Earlier tonight, Chris Matthews even told Schultz that if he wasn't an MSNBC host, he could be head of the AFL-CIO.) When it became clear that Barrett would lose, Schultz looked almost teary eyed. Not long after, the network's contributors immediately began suggesting that this was, in fact, good news for Obama — who, after all, hadn't even set foot in Wisconsin — and began attacking Mitt Romney.

(Also on POLITICO: Supporter slaps Barrett after loss)

Meanwhile, Fox News was blatantly rooting for Gov. Scott Walker, and the moment it became clear that Walker might win, host Sean Hannity called it "a repudiation of big unions," which did "everything they could do to demonize Scott Walker." Guest Hugh Hewitt then predicted that, five months from now, Romney would follow Walker just "as Reagan followed Thatcher." Fox's Greta Van Susteren later hosted what amounted to a victory celebration for the Republicans.

Given such blatantly partisan coverage, it was absolutely impossible to watch either network and gain any clear understanding of the actual significance of the event, much less what effect it would actually have on the 2012 presidential election.

Which means it was the perfect night for CNN, the network that bears the slogan "CNN = Politics" and claims to have "the best political team on television," to step up and offer what only it can offer: a semblance of nonpartisan political news coverage.

This is what was happening on the three networks between 9:48 p.m. and 9:51 p.m. tonight, during which NBC called the Wisconsin election for Walker:

Eight minutes later, CNN's Wolf Blitzer interrupted the network's rerun of the Queen's Diamond Jubilee to break the news.

CNN has no obligation to cover the Wisconsin recall, and one could argue that CNN doesn't need to break that political news, or spend the 10 o'clock hour speculating on the potential political ramifications of the various outcomes. But I highly doubt that CNN would make that argument.

Remember: This is the network that won the primaries, and gets its best primetime ratings when there's a political race.

The network did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Walker's had 1 and 1/2 years.

Wisconsin's economy is one of the worst in the country, jobs suck...

Walked got his way on unions - and it didn't cure anything.

2/3 of the $ in this campaign came from outside the state - and we all know he with the money wins elections 94% of the time (Hi, romney GOP winner).

SO really, this is a case of wisc voters being stupid and easily swayed by an assload of $.  Theeir economy will continue to suck.  Walker's "WIN" ensures things continue to suck.  Bravo.

Walker inherited a 3.6 billion dollar deficit.  Teachers were getting let go left and right for not having tenure.  Mass layoffs (public sector).  Walker balanced the budget and there's surplus without layoffs.  BEFORE HE took office, Wisconsin lost more than 150,000 jobs between 2008 and 2010.

Oh, and btw ~  Wisconsin's unemployment rate is 6.7%

What's the national average?
  ::)
 ;)

AND!  Our property taxes went down!  BTW~ our taxes are one of the highest in the country.

What do you propose another (D) candidate should've done?

Also, the $ gap in campaign funds is grossly misleading.  No one is reporting the tens of millions spent by the the other side for the recall effort (ie; out of state workers forging getting petitions signed, the Falk campaign, etc.

Now the lefties on Huffington Post and Democratic Underground are trying to talk smack by yapping about a supposed win in one of the Senate races that would flip the Senate in the Dems' favor.

However, the race hasn't been called yet. The Democrat challenger is up by less than 800 votes and a recount is looming.

To top it all off, the Senate is closed for the rest of the year (barring a special session called by Walker) and by the time it reconvenes, the GOP will have control of the Senate again (assuming they even lost it in the first place) due to a regularly scheduled election in November.

Five Lessons From Big Blue's Wisconsin Disaster

Republicans and Democrats look to November after a dramatic night in Wisconsin.posted Jun 6, 2012 12:29pm EDT

John Ellis BuzzFeed Contributor

 http://www.buzzfeed.com/johnellis/five-lessons-from-big-blues-wisconsin-disaste-5krk

1. Big Blue Loses Big

(Getty Images / Andy Manis)

Here’s the scam that has been going on for decades: Public employee unions demand hefty wage increases. Politicians say: “no way, we’ll have to raise taxes.” Public employee unions say: “okay, we’ll take lower wage increases in return for ever-more generous pension and retiree health benefits.” Politicians say: “that won’t work long term.” Unions say: “that will be someone else’s problem.” Politicians say: “deal.”

Time passes. Longevity increases. Financial crises and slower economic growth cripple pension fund returns. Suddenly “the long term” is today. Unsustainable pension and retiree health benefits begin to wreak fiscal havoc. The Blue Social Model no longer works.

There are two ways to fix this problem. The first is political. The second is to let the markets decide who gets what. Voters in California and Wisconsin last night chose the political option. They voted to reduce pension benefits in San Jose and San Diego, California (the 8th and 10th largest cities in the US) and they voted to affirm Governor Scott Walker’s assault on the bargaining power of public employee unions.

Ross Douthat has a big picture column on this today at the New York Times, which is useful. Managing the collapse of the Blue Social Model is now the central issue in municipal, state and county governance.

2. Big Blue Can’t Even Get a Tobacco Tax Done In California

Cycling great and cancer survivor Lance Armstrong campaigns at the Children's Hospital in Los Angeles for Proposition 29, which would have imposed a $1-per-pack increase in the price of cigarettes and other tobacco products.

(AP / Reed Saxon)

Everyone knows that California is broke. Tax revenues are so weak that the state recently announced that its projected budget deficit would explode from $9 billion to $16 billion.

What to do? Raise easy taxes! What are easy taxes? Cigarette taxes! Specifically, raise the tax on each pack of cigarettes sold in the state by one dollar. On the ballot it went. Down it went, 51-49%. No easy taxes for you Sacramento!

Nothing says Big Blue like California. The fiscal crisis there now grows more acute.

3. The Midnight Tweeter

President Obama kept his distance from the Wisconsin gubernatorial recall election. He did manage to send a last-minute tweet, reiterating his support for Tom Barrett. But that was about it.

Now we know why. Barrett was certain to lose. His support among white voters had collapsed. According to the, ahem, exit poll, roughly 90% of the electorate in Wisconsin yesterday was white. If 90% of the voters in Wisconsin are white in the November general election, Mitt Romney need only win 56% of them to win the state. He wouldn’t need any of the “other” voters at all.

Nationally, when he won the 2008 general election by a wide margin, President Obama garnered 43% of the white vote. That was at the height of his political powers. He’s long since left that perch.

Wisconsin is a toss-up now. The tri-state block of Wisconsin, Minnesota and Iowa (all of which have overwhelmingly white electorates) are in play.

4. Exit Polls

Very conservative voters avoid exit pollsters. When they are the “nth” voter at an exit point, they often decline the opportunity to participate. The next voter is therefore taken. Very conservative voters are therefore under-counted.

Combine this with budget restraints (the exit polling company surveys, arguably, half as many polling “points” as they might otherwise do, just for safety’s sake) and you end up with scores of “analysts” on TV talking nonsense, based on erroneous polling data. The clients of the exit polling company (television networks, newspapers, the AP) need to fix this problem.

5. GOTV

Voter Robin Milaeger speaks with canvasser Mike Kozaria, of the conservative group American Majority Action in Oconomowoc, Wisc.

(Reuters / STAFF)

Republican get-out-the-vote operations in Wisconsin were impressive across the state. In the main, Governor Walker ran ahead of his 2010 tallies, county-by-county.

Democratic get-out-the-vote operations were not so impressive, except in Dane and Milwaukee counties, where same-day registration ran up their totals in those Democratic strongholds, considerably.

A Massachusetts political operative named Joe Ricca ran the same- day registration/GOTV operation for the Gore campaign in 2000 and was widely credited with delivering the state to Mr. Gore by a 16,000 vote margin over George W. Bush. Team Obama will be looking for Mr. Ricca. They’ll need every last vote in November.

Democratic leader consoles Wisconsin party after recall
By Brendan O'Brien | Reuters – 9 hours ago

MILWAUKEE (Reuters) - Democratic National Committee chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz rallied Wisconsin Democrats holding their state convention this weekend, urging them to regroup after a failed attempt to recall the state's Republican governor.

Wasserman Schultz said Wisconsin Democrats had been up against "nothing short of an avalanche of secret, out of state, and corporate special interest money" in their bid to unseat Governor Scott Walker, who enjoyed a 7-to-1 financial advantage over his challenger Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett.

Democrats are a bunch of bitches when they complain about being outspent. The spending gap was more like 2-1 instead of 7-1 when you include the unions. Republicans just wanted this thing more. People in general are bitches when they complain about being outspent, as if it is some unfair advantage or something. The Santorum and Gingrich fucktards did the same thing when Romney was winning the primary. For fucks sake, that money doesnt just fall out of the sky.
