I have the feeling you are not aware what "40 proof" means.   An alcohol's "proof" is twice the alcohol content.   So, a typical hard liquor that is 40% alcohol, would be 80 proof.   40 proof is not that strong of a drink in terms of hard liquor.

I've learned more and more about 'proof' of drinks.  nothing beats merlot for me.
