Child dies after fall into Pittsburgh zoo exhibit and being attacked by African painted dogs

PITTSBURGH, Pa. - Officials say a young child died after falling into an exhibit at the Pittsburgh zoo and being mauled by African painted dogs.

Tracy Gray of the Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium said the accident happened at about 11:45 a.m. Sunday. It's not clear whether the child died from the fall or the attack.

Zoo president and CEO Barbara Baker says the child, who was about 3 years old, fell about 14 feet into the exhibit. She says there were 11 dogs in the enclosure and some attacked the child.

The zoo says that the animals are about as big as medium-sized domestic dogs, two to 2 1/2 feet high and 37 to 80 pounds. They are considered endangered.

Time to ban African painted dogs, clearly they are just too risky to have in cages in a zoo.

Most likely died from the fall, which is a good thing he did, considering being mauled by dogs would be a much more painful way to die for the little guy.

Shitty story. Not too sure why people hold their kids on the ledge like that. Also surprised there wasnt better protection so people dont fall over.

Yep people are that stupid some may recall the story I told of the woman nearly eaten by a salty when I was working as a zoo keeper, people ate just really uneducated about animals

The mother placed the 2 year old on a railing (in a standing position), and he lost his balance.

Why in God's name would one do that?

The poor kid fell 11 feet where he got mauled.

I am surprised that no one is calling for the dogs to be destroyed. After all they were wrong and should know better, they are wrong for acting like wild dogs.
