Olive oil certainly wasn't worth all that fighting.   popeye and Bluto should have been wingmen and took that boat to another port.

I don't take kindly to disrespect. not on the internet, not in person, not in a grocery store parking lot, not in like at walmart, not in a restaurant, not at the beach, not at the dry cleaners... anywhere.

ppl talk about the 'pussyfication' of America, yet they run their mouths thinking they won't get slapped and get their arm broken in front of their friends.

spent many yrs in a place where if you talk slick and say something out of line to somebody, you know that when you say it, you better be ready for what happens. most ppl here in the 'real world', aren't ready for what could happen.. and run their mouths like the world is a make believe cartoon. despite wearing nice slacks, polished shoes and a nice shirt, the guy you steal that parking spot from at the grocery store and proceed to flip off, may have just gotten out of prison and will have no problem identifying they bitch in you and proceed to teach you a lesson by taking you down to the ground and kicking out your teeth before you even know what happened.

the guy who's willing to go the furthest, wins. if you're not willing to go all the way, it's best you keep your mouth shut and move on, and make it to the next day.

It's true that 'spinach' used to be slang for pot, which was thought to give bursts of energy. And if you watch the oldest Popeye cartoons, he regularly inhaled the spinach through his pipe.

Lol, Popeye started as an add-on character in a comic that featured Olive Oyl with a different boyfriend. The schtick was that he spent all his time on land in jail, for single-handedly clearing bars in fights. It was from about WWI (immediately after, maybe 1919).

No doubt, the 'spinach' was the writer having a laugh about pot.

I get the feeling Popeye's creator was laughing his ass off over these underlying messages. Not only with the pot theme, but think about the choice of "Oyl" as the name of a main character. And the fact that Popeye was a sailor with huge forearms.

LOL

The whole thing was probably a gag that made it big.

Yes.

Apparently it was Popeye's creator who introduced synthol to bodybuilding and the usage of "Oyl" in general.

If you think about it, Bluto was constantly trying to rape Olive Oyl and Popeye was always trying to prevent it from happening.

Lol..I'm thinking it was right around the time oil interests were set to change everything in a huge way, and the guy might have been making a particular statement about that.
