I've repeatedly heard he graduated Magna Cum Laude, but that's not first in class.
First in class should be Summa, Egregia or Maxima Cum Laude, at least in theory. And I've never heard that he was Valedictorian of his class, so the MCL distinction doesn't say much, especially in light of the fact:
*Grambling State is a black college. Those schools rarely rate anywhere NEAR as high as regular 4-year institutions.

Ronnie played football for Grambling. Anyone who's attended a university with a decent baskeball or football program knows good and damned well that athletes get preferential treatment. Even when they're not simply handed good grades, they get to see the exams well in advance of the administration of such, get countless passes for missing classes, etc., etc., etc.
Graduating with a good GPA under those circumstances doesn't exactly impress me. The only people who fancy Ronnie intelligent are nuthuggers who don't know shit about higher eduction (or choose to ignore that knowledge thanks to their severe man-lust for the guy). He might not be retarded, but Ronster is barely above average intelligence IF that.
