I don't think you realise the state Russia was in before Putin took charge... there was practically no middle class. Had rich and poor. I personally went to St. Petersburg in 1999 and again in 2010. The difference was night and day. You could see it people's faces, literally.

Around the christmas and new year there was for example again record amount of Russian tourists coming to Finland for vacation. That's great during these hard economic times.
