After the riots of 67 there was what was called 'white flight' thats when most of the white population left detroit for the suburbs. The auto companys bought a lot of cheap property, buying out the poorest neighborhoods. Those people bought homes in the nicer areas a crime went through the roof.

And that was all before crack hit in the early 80's.

I wonder why there was all that white flight.  This indsputable fact may shed some light on the matter

I think the Clarence Boddicker-led crime wave from the 80s was the final nail in the coffin. 

- The '67 race riots drove out the whites and productive/educated citizenry in general.

- The formerly Big 3 found it much cheaper and more efficient to produce their vehicles overseas and in different parts of the country, in order to escape the ridiculous payscale and demands of Union labor.

- The formerly Big 3 made horrendous decisions that led to many billions of dollars lost in regards to product....placing an emphasis on large pickups and SUVs while completely ignoring the passenger car segment..all the while gas crept up to over four bucks a gallon. In order to save costs, they slashed thousands of jobs in an attempt to streamline their companies....Detroit was a huge casualty.

A guy was riding the bus to work when a mean scruffy looking Arab carrying a big suitcase got on.  the guy was all nervous and kept staring at the Arab man who stared back at him.  Then the Arab tells him "Stay the fuck out of Detroit". The guy asks why, is he going to blow it up, is there a bomb!. The arab replies back "No, it's a shithole"
