Article is lacking many types of vehicles that are unique to states or counties. For example Ford F-150, Chevrolet Impala and Tahoe (pretty common vehicles) and of course there's the undercover vehicles.

True, but I think this is more for the highways...the pursuit vehicles---the new SS is coming along online as well.
I believe the Taurus' that are used are the non-turbo'd ones.

I've heard about undercover Mustangs but I see the F-150 and Impala on the highway daily. But the worst case is Hawaii where they have subsidized police cars (ie cops can use their own vehicles)...

Where I live, Cops drive a variety of unmarked vehicles as well.  From Dodge Durango's to Ford Explorers.    Looking at headlights is pointless.

agencies also analyze what will be their workhorses. Cost, mpg, etc.
Durangos would be good in suburbia, terrible on interstates, wasting gas like a mofo sitting around. Explorers, better, as I believe that they are based on a car chassis now (I do not know).
V6 Chargers for in town, V8s for the highways.

But,  you and others are right there are so many varieties in terms of the police switching things up.
